🌾 From Settat to Svalbard: Safeguarding Morocco’s Crop Diversity Morocco’s National Genebank at INRA recently deposited 860 seed samples in the Svalbard Global Seed Vault in Norway, a key step to ensure the long-term conservation of Morocco’s valuable crop diversity. ICARDA is proud to be part of this vital collaboration with Institut National de la Recherche Agronomique (Maroc) and Crop Trust under the BOLD Project, bridging national and global scientific capacity. As Dr. Zakaria Kehel, ICARDA’s Head of Genetic Resources, notes: “National genebanks like INRA hold diversity that doesn’t exist anywhere else – landraces and wild relatives that are essential for breeding. When we combine that with CGIAR’s research capacity and technology, both sides benefit. ICARDA at #GlobalGreenGrowthWeek2025 As part of Adaptation and Resilience Day, ICARDA joined global partners to explore pathways for sustainable green development. 🔶 Director General Aly Abousabaa took part in a high-level panel on desertification, stressing that “Degradation and desertification pose serious threats to livelihoods and food security. Under CGIAR Multifunctional Landscapes science program , ICARDA is working with the National Livestock and Pastures Agency (OEP) at Tunisia’s Ministry of Agriculture to develop a 15-year strategic plan to revitalize its role and drive multifunctional, sustainable development outcomes for the livestock sector. The first workshop brought together experts and partners to lay the foundation for stronger, more structured strategic support for the OEP. Follow-up sessions planned later this year will help identify and organize sociotechnical priorities into a transition roadmap for the livestock sector. These workshops aim to strengthen OEP’s capacity to overcome barriers, including intensifying climate change, resource constraints, and evolving livestock systems, through: ✅ Developing innovative, sustainable intervention approaches ✅ Promoting digital and AI-based technologies for productivity and traceability ✅ Strengthening collaboration between public, private, and research sectors ✅ Defining clear, results-based objectives for sustainability and food security

Amjad Badr, Syria’s Minister of Agriculture, I am pleased to see our collaboration move forward, as ICARDA, under the patronage of the Ministry, hosted a high-level consultation workshop on the Program for the Rehabilitation of Syria’s Agriculture Sector. ☀️ 🌱 The workshop convened national and international partners around a shared vision to strengthen Syria’s agricultural sector. The rehabilitation plan presented provides a comprehensive roadmap for the entire Syrian agricultural sector, building on ICARDA's 50 years of expertise in transforming dryland agriculture. 👏 I am truly optimistic about the journey ahead and the impact this partnership will bring.
