  • We’re back from the 2025 National Brownfields Training Conference, and what a week it was! ✨   Our Office of Site Evaluation led a mobile workshop at the Pullman State Historic Site, giving attendees a hands-on look at how we investigate sites using modern tools and technology. Our Site Remediation Program shared our part in the Green Era Campus, a sustainable redevelopment on Chicago’s South Side that transformed a former Brownfield into a renewable energy hub, diverting 85,000 tons of food waste each year, generating clean energy, and producing nutrient-rich soil for urban farming.   From connecting with environmental professionals nationwide to showcasing the impact of our work in Illinois communities, the conference was truly rewarding. 💬🌎   Take a peek at some of our favorite moments! 🎥

  • We’re so proud to be part of the transformation of the Pullman State Historic Site! Proof of how brownfield revitalization is continually improving communities across Illinois.

Congratulations to the Pullman State Historic Site, winner of the 2025 National Phoenix Award at #Brownfields2025! 🏆   Once home to the Pullman Palace Car Company, this iconic site remains a powerful symbol of industrial innovation, labor rights, and community redevelopment.   As part of a conference mobile workshop, we toured the historic grounds and observed modern brownfields assessment tools in action.   Today, the Pullman site is an active work zone, a state park, and a beacon of transformation. Presented by ICMA - International City/County Management Association and sponsored by the The Mannik & Smith Group, Inc., the Phoenix Awards reflect the progression of brownfield redevelopment over the past 20+ years by recognizing extraordinary practitioners and projects. Congratulations again to everyone who made the Pullman State Historic Site possible!

  • The Illinois EPA was proud to participate in a mobile workshop at the 2025 National Brownfields Training Conference, held at the Illinois Department of Natural Resources historic Pullman State Historic Site. As part of the workshop, our Office of Site Evaluation led a live presentation demonstrating how we conduct site investigations using modern tools like photoionization detectors (PIDs), X-ray fluorescence analyzers (XRFs), and a geoprobe. Attendees got a hands-on look at how these technologies help assess brownfields and support safe, sustainable redevelopment. Pullman’s transformation is a powerful example of how environmental assessment, cleanup, and adaptive reuse can shape the future while honoring the past. #Brownfields2025
