E-commerce hasn't had a real paradigm shift in 30 years. LLMs were supposed to change that. Instead, decision time went up. That tension is exactly what drew me to Onton when I covered their seed round from Footwork last November. Zach Hudson, Co-Founder and CEO, sat down with me for my 5 Questions series. A few things that stood out: The average shopper still spends 79 days and 15+ hours across 12 websites to make a purchase decision. 1. Chat interfaces did not fix that. If anything, they made it worse. Onton is not just another LLM wrapper. They spent over a year building their own graph and vector databases, plus a self-learning layer, because better UI does not fix bad inputs. 2. The data extinction problem is real, and no one is talking about it enough. LLMs are compressing the expert content they rely on. Over time, that erodes the reviews, comparisons, and depth that made search actually useful. What I keep coming back to: Zach has been patient in a space that rewards speed-chasing.
