📯 Nature tech in emerging markets? It's a strange irony that at Okala we see nature tech disproportionately deployed in emerging economies. But it makes total sense- this is where some of the most pristine ecosystems remaining on the planet bump up against the economic aspirations of their populations. Often, the prescriptive approaches to surveying biodiversity that we find in the UK and Europe are absent or just don't work, and can be replaced by a focus on using the best tools available for the job of mapping biodiversity robustly, transparently and at scale. Here, lenders- like multilateral development banks- through lender requirements like IFC - International Finance Corporation's Performance Standard 6 #PS6 or The World Bank Group's Environmental and Social Standard 6 #ESS6, mandate the protection of species and critical habitats through the application of the mitigation hierarchy. 💡 This demonstrates the power of finance to safeguard nature- if you don't meet these requirements, you can't borrow money for your project. That's a 𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺 long introduction to say- 🍸 Come and join us and our partners Invest Africa Ltd on the evening of Monday the 20th, 18:00 - 20:00 in London 🏆 to celebrate England winning the World Cup! - and to understand how our work at Okala is supporting projects in emerging economies minimise impacts on nature and biodiversity.
