About us

OpenStack is an open source software project Hosted by the OpenInfra Foundation for creating private and public clouds. Over 300 OpenStack-powered public cloud data centers and thousands of private clouds at a scale of more than 40 million physical cores span the world. Since launching in 2010, OpenStack has become one of the top four most active open source projects. What OpenStack software does: OpenStack is an open source cloud platform that provides APIs to orchestrate bare metal, virtual machine and container resources on a single network. The same OpenStack code powers a global network of public and private clouds, backed by the largest ecosystem of technology providers, to enable cost savings, control and portability. Learn more at http://www.openstack.org/software. Why open matters: All of the code for OpenStack is freely available under the Apache 2.0 license. Anyone can run it, build on it, or submit changes back to the project. We strongly believe that an open development model is the only way to foster badly-needed cloud standards, remove the fear of proprietary lock-in for cloud customers, and create a large ecosystem that spans cloud providers. OpenStack Users: OpenStack has thousands of users worldwide across industries including financial services, telecom, retail, manufacturing, internet and ecommerce companies. Find OpenStack user stories at http://www.openstack.org/users. For more information and to join the community, visit www.OpenStack.org/join and join the conversation in our OpenStack LinkedIn Group. Join us at events: Each year, the OpenInfra Foundation and community members around the world host global Summits and regional events to help support and grow the community. I am happy to share that I gave my first #KubeCon talk, together with my colleague Bertrand Souville, at KubeCon + CloudNativeCon + OpenInfra Summit + PyTorch Conference China 2026. We presented how AI agents can turn complex telecom requirements and specifications into reviewable engineering outcomes, helping identify bugs, gaps, and inconsistencies earlier while improving engineering quality and reducing manual effort. We shared our experience through real-world use cases with Kubernetes Operators and OpenStack Tacker. #KubeCon #CloudNativeCon #Telco #CloudNativeTelco #AIAgents

From 13% to 59% GPU utilization: Day 2 #OpenInfraSummit Asia keynotes showed how open source transforms AI infrastructure in production. Thierry Carrez discusses that if you do not run your own infrastructure, you pay for someone else's operating margins. As hyperscaler capex continues to rise, relying entirely on public clouds leaves organizations exposed to rising costs and limited control. Running production AI workloads on open infrastructure gives teams direct cost control, vendor independence, and regulatory compliance. During the Day 2 keynotes, speakers detailed how open source tools solve real-world scale and security challenges: NVIDIA's 🛡️ Zvonko Kaiser covered the path from container isolation to Confidential Containers, introducing bidirectional confidentiality. Full-stack attestation and hardware security layers allow teams to protect both input data and proprietary models in serverless GPU environments. Viettel Group shared how Vietnam's largest telecommunications group built a multi-layer AI platform on OpenStack Nova, Ironic, and Kata Containers. By moving from physical servers to tokenized access, they eliminated hardware silos, boosted GPU utilization from 13% to 59%, and delivered 3.5 times the work per card. Then fupan li from the Kata Containers community highlighted how Kata 4.0 provides hardware-level VM isolation per workload to protect infrastructure when AI agents execute untrusted code or access external APIs. Projects like OpenStack, Kata Containers, StarlingX, and Zuul provide a production-proven open source foundation for the modern AI stack.

  • Instead of handing out physical servers, Viettel Group moved to handing out tokens. Vietnam's largest telecommunications group built a multi-layer AI platform on open source infrastructure across OpenInfra Foundation, Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) and PyTorch projects. Managing 2,500 GPUs presented a classic challenge: hardware silos resulted in 13% compute utilization. Viettel addressed this by building a multi-layer stack. On layer 1, OpenStack Nova and Ironic handle bare metal provisioning, while Kata Containers supplies isolated container environments for GPU workloads. On layers 2 and 3, CNCF and PyTorch tools provide orchestration and token serving. The platform drove compute utilization up to 59% and delivered 3.5 times the work per card.

"If you don't run your own infrastructure, you pay for someone else's margins," Thierry Carrez discusses the infrastructure that enables frontier intelligence, live from the #OpenInfraSummit Asia! Frontier intelligence requires more than open models and frameworks. It demands an open foundation built on compute, networking, and storage. Hyperscaler capex investments continue to rise, but relying entirely on public clouds means paying someone else's operating margins. Running production AI workloads on open infrastructure gives organizations direct cost control, vendor independence, and regulatory compliance. Projects like OpenStack, Kata Containers, StarlingX, and Zuul provide a production-proven, open source foundation for the complete AI software stack. #WeAreOpenInfra

Modernizing translation pipelines for global open source projects does not require massive GPU clusters. On September 9, Seongsoo Cho and DaGyeong Kim will share how the OpenStack internationalization team migrated decades of translation artifacts across 50 languages to Weblate. Learn how they combined Zuul-powered automation with CPU-based LLMs for draft translations without relying on GPUs, while onboarding new contributors through university mentorship.
