Tomaž Hočevar from our team at University of Ljubljana, Faculty of Computer and Information Science (UL FRI) was one of the main organisers of this year's Central European Olympiad in Informatics in Ljubljana 🇸🇮 🙌 CEOI is one is one of the leading #programming competitions for secondary school students in Central Europe. 💎 It takes place annually, bringing together the region’s top young programmers to compete in algorithms and computational thinking. 🗺️ 💻 👑 Tomaž served as Chair of the CEOI 2026 Scientific Committee, leading the team responsible for the scientific and technical aspects of the competition, including the preparation and evaluation of the competition tasks. 🚦🔑 ✅ The top CEOI 2026 individual competitor was Artur Smoleński from Poland 🇵🇱 🥇 – on the second day of the competition, he was the only contestant to solve all the tasks correctly. 👏 Romania was the country with the best team result, winning three gold medals and one silver. 🇷🇴 🥇🥇🥇🥈 Slovenian competitors Luka Heric and Vid Furlan won bronze medals. 🥉🥉 Congratulations to the winners, organisers, and all the competitors for coming together and co-creating a fantastic event, showcasing excellence, vision, and community spirit! 💯 🎉 The competition was was organised by ACM Slovenia, with significant support from the main sponsors, Jane Street, JetBrains, and QuantCo. 🙏 The Organising Committee was led by Andrej Brodnik at UL FRI. 👏 More about the competition, sponsors, and the full results 👉 https://ceoi.acm.si/ #computerscience #informatics #education #europe #vision

Every beat of the heart: How AI is helping us personalise heart treatment ❤️ With the University Medical Centre Ljubljana, the Institute of Oncology Ljubljana, and the Jozef Stefan Institute, we are developing new, more predictable therapies for treating heart disease. 🇸🇮🩺 👩💻🫰 In the Kardio EP project, the goal is to develop #AI-guided electroporation therapies for treating cardiac arrhythmias and heart failure – advancing personalised, non-viral gene and stem cell therapies for heart regeneration. 👀🔝 At a recent meeting, we discussed the fundamental mechanisms of a medical technique called pulsed field ablation – how pulsed electric fields affect heart tissue and how these effects can be used to improve the treatment of heart rhythm disorders. ⚡🫀 💡 Recent research shows that the strength of the electric field changes with distance from the treatment catheter, creating areas where heart cells are permanently treated, temporarily affected, or simply stimulated. 💎 Understanding these different effects helps explain why the treatment works and why some changes disappear while others are permanent. The team is also studying changes in the heart’s electrical signals during treatment to determine whether they can be used to estimate the size and depth of the affected area in real time. 📉 📈 🔍 A key challenge is distinguishing between permanent changes in the heart tissue and temporary effects that may recover over time. 🤔 Nika Krivic from our team at the University of Ljubljana, Faculty of Computer and Information Science presented a preview of the web app we are currently working on that makes it easier to explore, understand, and compare complex ECG recordings. ❤️ 🩺 💻 Her work will be extremely valuable for reviewing and monitoring treatment outcomes and for identifying relevant signal segments linked to clinically significant events. 👏 More updates coming soon! ✈️ 🌎 After having her work published in Nature Portfolio - Communications Biology, Lena Trnovec from our team recently travelled to Washington, USA, 🇺🇸 to present her research at a poster session at the Intelligent Systems for Molecular Biology ISMB 2026 conference, organised by ISCB - International Society for Computational Biology. 👏 Did you know that Orange is, in fact, developed at the Laboratory for Bioinformatics (Biolab) at the University of Ljubljana, Faculty of Computer and Information Science? 🍊 🧫 🇸🇮 Most of our work and research at Biolab takes place at the intersection of #machinelearning and data visualisation, developing new techniques for data exploration and explainable #AI. I’m very happy to have presented my research as a poster at ISMB 2026 organized by ISCB - International Society for Computational Biology in Washington, D.C. My research explored whether single cell models trained on human and mouse data can still capture meaningful biology in evolutionarily distant species, such as worms and amoebae. I also had the chance to explore the city, learn about new discoveries, and exchange ideas with fellow researchers. Thank you to everyone who stopped by my poster and shared their valuable insights. I am especially grateful to my mentor, Prof. Dr. Blaz Zupan, and to the University of Ljubljana, Faculty of Computer and Information Science for this opportunity.

#AI in Biology: Communication breakdown - What happens when cells in our body stop behaving as part of a coordinated system ⛓️💥 👀❓ Did you know that there has been a major shift in how we study biology: from looking at cells under a microscope 🔬 to using large-scale data, mathematics, and AI to measure patterns across many thousands of individual cells at once? 👩💻 Lena Trnovec and Blaz Zupan from our team at the University of Ljubljana, Faculty of Computer and Information Science 🇸🇮, together with researchers at Baylor College of Medicine 🇺🇸, recently co-authored a paper in Nature - Communications Biology on one of nature's most striking feats: how separate, independent cells come together to form a single, coordinated organism. 🧩 🦠 😮 The work is based on a single-celled organism that lives on its own as long as there's food. 💁♀️ But when cells starve, about 100,000 of them join up and build a multicellular body together. The authors developed a way to measure how synchronised the cells are with one another, capturing not just what they do, but how well they work together. This matters because coordination is one of the basic principles of life ❤️: many developmental processes depend on it, for instance, embryonic development (understanding development and birth defects) 🐥, or tissue formation (important in regenerative medicine and tissue formation) 🏥, and more. The key finding ➡️: Early chemical signals act like a metronome 🥁 that gets cells in sync at the very start of development. When this signalling is missing, cells lose that coordination and development becomes disorganised and out of step 👣 🌪️ - though intriguingly, in one case, the cells still reach the correct cell types, just each on its own schedule. 🕜 🕖 🕑 This reframes how we think about organism development. 💯 More than each cell following its own script, there is a constant conversation going on between cells ↔️, where staying in sync matters as much as what any single cell becomes. When that communication breaks down, cells stop behaving as part of a coordinated whole, and development falls out of step. Teacher input helped us create a new learning sequence that has since become our favourite! 🦁💬🫰 Our February tour of school visits in Slovenia 🇸🇮 inspired our team at the University of Ljubljana, Faculty of Computer and Information Science to create a learning sequence on the topic of classification that seems to work incredibly well in the classroom! 🔝 In the new sequence, which we recently used in a session with pedagogy students at the Univerza v Mariboru / University of Maribor, we start with a hands-on experience of sorting pictures of gnomes of different professions into groups based on their profession, which intuitively leads participants to the idea of a classification tree. 🌳 We then make this concept more concrete by moving on to the Animal Tree activity - using a computer, we gradually add new animal species and observe how a classification tree is built and how the classification process works. 🐏 🐀 🫏 💻 👀 This approach leads participants to a strong conceptual understanding of classification – one of the key techniques in #machinelearning, but it also creates a highly engaging atmosphere. 🎯 Kids in particular enjoy coming up with different animals, looking for ways to create unexpected outcomes, and trying to trick the computer with animals it cannot yet classify correctly. 😁 To inspire the students in Maribor to use these data exploration approaches in their own teaching practice, we introduced them to selected parts of several #dataliteracy and machine learning activities that we have designed. Apart from our Gnomes and Animal Tree activities, we also briefly presented to them other Pumice 🐾 activities like Climate Zones, the Recommender System, Candy Computer, and others that can be found at the Gairdin website. We also introduced Orange Data Mining 🍊, the #dataanalytics software behind the computer-based parts of the activities. More than 1️⃣ 1️⃣ 0️⃣ 0️⃣ students successfully completed the #DALI4US challenge in Slovenia! 🇸🇮 😯 🙌 As the project is slowly approaching its conclusion, it has created some big waves! In Slovenia, 38 schools took part and succeeded in a challenge we have designed for upper primary school kids and their teachers. We called it Four Trips into #AI. 🏄♂️ 🧃 The idea was to run a large-scale experiment with the #dataliteracy activities developed in the project 🇪🇺 : 🎈 Cartoons Recommender System 🎈 What do Gnomes Do? 🎈 Climate Zones 🎈 Candy Computer In the practical, engaging activities, students learn about some key concepts, applications, and techniques from #machinelearning, #dataanalytics, and AI, such as recommender systems, classification, clustering, and reinforcement learning. 52 teachers took on the challenge, studied the materials, and implemented them in their classrooms all around the country. 👏 To complete it, their students needed to successfully finish at least three out of the four activities. Throughout the challenge, Ana Farič and Janez Demšar from the University of Ljubljana were in touch with the teachers both in person and online, and were thrilled to receive so many exciting reports, photos, and feedback! 🙏 To celebrate the fantastic work in schools all around the country, we decided to reward the teachers and students with custom-designed hoodies and T-shirts. The design featured on the black hoodies for teachers – a puma in a garden - was inspired by two words: pumice (little pumas in Slovenian) and gairdin (garden in Irish). 🐾 🌿 🌺 👕 Pumice (a Slovene acronym for Teaching with a Pinch of AI) is an award-winning initiative in Slovenia led by AI education enthusiasts at the University of Ljubljana, Faculty of Computer and Information Science, bringing AI education into schools through practical data exploration (DALI4US is a part of it), while Gairdin (AI is hiding in there, too) is the DALI4US website with teacher resources. 👌 The hoodie pairs perfectly with a more playful design of a young puma on a skateboard, which appears on the white T-shirts for students. Both designs were created by a wonderful Slovenian designer Agnieszka Rovsnik. 🫰 Massive congratulations to everyone involved! 🎉 🎉 🎉 Let's hope the challenge continues to encourage the curiosity and exploratory spirit of the next generations of teachers and young learners to dip their toes into the exciting wild world of data and AI foundations. 🤿 Stay tuned to hear the teachers' thoughts about the challenge! DALI4US joined forces with Innovative Pedagogy 5.0 🇪🇺 👏 In Slovenia 🇸🇮, we brought together teachers from two European projects that develop and promote innovative approaches to learning #dataanalysis and #machinelearning in primary school! Janez Demšar and Ana Farič from the University of Ljubljana, Faculty of Computer and Information Science embarked on a little national tour and travelled around the country to meet big groups of teachers in Muta, Črenšovci, and Šentjur. 🚞 🚗 🗺️ The goal was to showcase, experiment with, and discuss with the teachers effective ways to teach #AI and #dataliteracy through a set of exploratory activities we have designed to bring the principles of data exploration and machine learning approaches closer to primary school children. 🔎 😮 💭 We kicked off our tour in Muta, where we were welcomed by our largest group of participants, around 60 teachers. 🔝 In Črenšovci and Šentjur, we worked with groups of around 30 teachers. 🪁 In the workshops, we put teachers in the role of students and guided them through several fun and engaging learning activities, both unplugged and with Orange Data Mining, that you can find here 👉 https://gairdin.eu/ During and after the sessions, the teachers provided us with fantastic feedback and ideas. 👌 Their suggestions helped us improve instructions for teachers on the website above 🐾 and further develop the Animal Tree activity 👉 https://lnkd.in/diRBYaj7. ❌ We don't need mathematics – everyone can learn it from shop receipts. ❌ We don't need physics – everyone knows how to turn on the light switch. ❌ We don't need geography – we have Google Maps. ❌ We don't need chemistry – everyone can see how sugar dissolves in a cup of tea. ❌ We don't need biology – everyone who has ever had a cold knows how the human body works. We recently participated in the Slovene President’s Forum on the topic of #AI: Between Progress, Responsibility, and New Literacy. 🇸🇮 🧭 🗣️ In the expert consultation, Blaz Zupan from our team gave a talk highlighting the importance of #dataliteracy in today's society: computer science and informatics fundamentals should be treated as basic general knowledge, just like mathematics, languages, history, geography, etc., and taught systematically in schools. 🔤 ✅ But it isn't. President dr. Nataša Pirc Musar noted: “The absence of this subject in schools is a catastrophe for the future of our country and our nation. Our children and students are already using AI – but often without guidance, without critical distance, and without understanding what is happening behind the scenes. We are among the few countries in Europe 🇪🇺 without systematic computer science education. Data literacy in our schools is almost non-existent. 😕 While other countries are integrating these topics into their curricula, we continue to rely on projects that end before they manage to bring about real change. This must change – not in five years, but now. Every generation that does not acquire these skills represents a step backward for the entire country.” 💯 In 2028, a new mandatory subject Informatics and Digital Technologies is coming to Slovene primary schools, which is good news, however, it will only be taught in the 7th grade, in the scope of 3️⃣5️⃣ hours. In comparison, 134 hours in primary school are allocated for subjects like Chemistry or Physics. 👀 👾 Fun fact: In the 70ies, Slovenia was a pioneer in the field of computer science education. Experimental computer science classes in Slovene secondary schools began in 1971. By 1974/75, they had been introduced in 65 schools, placing Slovenia ahead of many European countries, including the Federal Republic of Germany, which only started implementing them in the late 1970s. The current curricular revision also envisions developing digital competencies in the scope of other subjects. In 🇪🇺 projects like KATARINA and DALI4US, our team at the University of Ljubljana, Faculty of Computer and Information Science has prepared innovative practical approaches, tools, activities, and resources that can be used for this, including #OrangeDataMining 🍊.
