About us
ORCID’s mission is to enable transparent and trustworthy connections between researchers, their contributions, and their affiliations by providing a unique, persistent identifier for individuals to use as they engage in research, scholarship, and innovation activities. We do this by providing three important things: 1. The ORCID iD: a unique, persistent identifier free of charge to researchers 2. An ORCID record connected to the ORCID iD, and 3. A set of Application Programming Interfaces (APIs), as well as the services and support of communities of practice that enable interoperability between an ORCID record and member organizations so researchers can choose to allow connection of their iD with their affiliations and contributions ORCID is a global, not-for-profit organization sustained by fees from our member organizations. We are community-built and governed by a Board of Directors representative of our membership with wide stakeholder representation. ORCID is supported by a dedicated and knowledgeable professional staff.

As ORCID Consortium Lead for Australia, the AAF welcomes the announcement of the Australian Research Council (ARC)’s PID Action Plan. ARC's PID Action Plan will increase the use of priority persistent identifiers, including ORCID iDs throughout ARC systems, reducing duplication of research and improving researcher accountability and research reproducibility. The Action Plan is critical to increasing the quality of data available to ARC, and is in alignment with the National PID Strategy and Roadmap activity. ORCID member organizations strengthen the scholarly record by contributing the data they hold about their researchers. ✅ Validated affiliations added by universities, awards by funders, and publications by publishers allow researchers to provide evidence of their career history and contributions. 📈 Better populated ORCID records increase data reuse and reduce admin burden for researchers. 🔐 Researchers always remain in control of the data included in their records. Lot's of interesting data in this post from Julie Anne Petro and Simon Porter on publisher adoption of ORCID. TL;DR — most publishers are doing a pretty good job with corresponding authors, but more needs to done to gather ORCID IDs from co-authors to ensure they receive appropriate recognition and credit for their work, and also to help improve research integrity.
🔍 Trust in research is essential - but how do we build it? In this new blog post for ORCID, Julie Anne Petro (Director of Communications, ORCID) and Simon Porter (VP of Research Futures, Digital Science) outline how scholarly publishers play a critical role in strengthening trust by adopting persistent identifiers (PIDs) - like ORCID - and integrating them into their workflows. 👉 Read their full post, “Scholarly Publishers and ORCID: Partnering to Advance Trust in Research”: https://ow.ly/caQ350WvZM7 Julie and Simon emphasize how ORCID addresses the “two key dimensions of trust”: 1. Verification of individual identity: Confirming the user’s personal identity. 2. Assessment of claim credibility: Evaluating the reliability of information linked to the user’s identity. Building on analysis from the “Australian National Persistent Identifier (PID) Benchmarking Toolkit – Consultation Draft” (see link below), they write that these two dimensions of trust are central to ORCID’s vision: a world where all who participate in research, scholarship, and innovation are uniquely identified and connected to their contributions across disciplines, borders, and time. 📣 A call to action: Julie and Simon provide a series of next steps publishers can take to increase the value of ORCID - making research more transparent, interoperable, and trustworthy. 🆔 Discover more in their post: https://ow.ly/caQ350WvZM7 📄 Read the “Australian National Persistent Identifier (PID) Benchmarking Toolkit – Consultation Draft”: https://ow.ly/RjAG50WvZM9 #ORCID #ResearchIntegrity #TrustInResearch #OpenScience #publishing #ScholarlyPublishing #PersistentIdentifiers #PIDs

Yesterday I had the opportunity to share about the power of Persistent Identifiers and how ORCID is helping unlock the full potential of Zambian research. Why does this matter? Because visibility recognition and global collaboration begin with trusted digital identities. Right now only a small fraction of Zambia’s researchers are connected through ORCID but that is starting to change. ORCID adoption means: • Greater visibility for researchers and institutions • Better tracking of research outputs and impact • Stronger integration into the global research ecosystem ORCID’s regional consortium approach is making it possible for institutions in underrepresented regions to work together share knowledge and adopt global standards in ways that fit local needs. Through the Global Participation Program and Membership Equity Program, countries like Zambia are building stronger more connected research communities. Let us work together to ensure Zambian contributions are seen shared and valued globally. The potential is there and now is the time to act. If you are at the Library and Information Association of Zambia (LIAZ) AGC I would love to connect and continue the conversation on strengthening research visibility and collaboration in Africa. #ORCID #OpenScience #LIAZ2025 #ResearchVisibility #PersistentIdentifiers #AfricaResearch #ZambiaResearch #GlobalParticipation #RegionalConsortium
