We love FerretDB at Layerbase and since Atlas doesn't provide Neon-style branching, we made a point to add support for it with FerretDB on https://lnkd.in/gEAEUK_u
🫡 FerretDB, "a truly Open Source MongoDB alternative" based on PostgreSQL with a DocumentDB engine, is no longer active. The project was launched in 2021 by ex-Percona employees in response to MongoDB switching to a non-Open Source license (SSPL). It reached general availability with its v1.0 release in 2023. Currently, it has 11k GitHub stars. However, no public list of adopters is available. Here's what I noticed and what made me think the project is dying: 1. In October 2025, FerretDB's CEO (Peter Farkas) came back to Percona now serving as its CEO. 2. In November 2025, FerretDB v2.7.0 became the latest project's release. Its GitHub repo had only two more commits since that, in December and February, and both are formal "bump deps". All repo-related workflows (e.g., security checks and package building) are currently failing. 3. The project's official website returns the "This account has expired" error. (Its blog and docs are still functioning, though.) Looks like an end of story for quite an interesting idea. #FerretDB #OpenSource #MongoDB #PostgreSQL #databases
