You probably don't think of equity like everyone else. In a few short weeks, the insights from our Interactive Offer release have made this clear. At public companies, employees focus on RSUs price and past performance. They’re doing a kind of mental technical analysis on the share price. At mid-stage startups, employees focus on the last funding round, valuation, and metrics that drive it up. Their option price is important, but it's more tied to increasing company value since the stock isn’t liquid yet. There’s simply no room for technical analysis. Early-stage startups are a different story. Employees may not even know the final business model, and valuations feel directional. Here, ownership percentage becomes the key focus, and the “sell” is about joining something with early traction and massive potential. This all points to one thing: employee offer presentation shouldn’t be one size fits all. It’s tax day! And I just spoke to Gautam, an incredibly bright student studying CS at Virginia Tech. Over the past weekend he launched Taxes fyi, an open source Chrome extension to help you view your take home pay after-tax directly on Levels.fyi. Completely unintentional, but midway through the call we had a good laugh realizing it’s April 15th, tax day. What a way to connect. Very cool to see the clarity and speed with which he approached building this side project. He scoured through state and federal government websites to gather and calculate the correct tax rates for each situation. No more bouncing around between tabs and calculators just to figure out how much you’ll actually make. Instead the entire experience personalized by state, role, and filing status is embedded right there within Levels.fyi. Gautam used Windsurf and Claude AI Sonnet 3.7 to rapidly prototype it out. And we spoke about some ways to automate how to procure each state’s tax information. Incredibly excited for Gautam and his next few releases for this tool. There's some awesome things in the works!
