It was great to attend the Public Engagement in Data Research Initiative (PEDRI) Good Practice Standards Frontiers Meeting to explore how the Good Practice Standards can be put into action #Data #Health #Research, with Sian Thanangadan and Dale William Kirkwood. Key takeaways: 1) As PEDRI Public Contributor Jan Speechley said “Every piece of data is a person”. We know it is imperative that the public understands the “who, what, when, why and how” with data use to build public trust and confidence, but we must aim for more. To quote a PEDRI Public Contributor “It’s not about getting people to trust you, it’s about demonstrating trustworthiness”. 2) “Public Good” or “Public Benefit” – what do these truly mean? Whilst there has been involvement with communities to understand these terms, we need to have further local conversations to define the term “public benefit”. 3) The 7 PEDRI Good Practice Standards clearly align with existing best practice guidance on working with people in communities. For me, two standards need to have a greater focus going forwards: 3a) “Standard 6: Effective involvement and engagement – There are clear tasks, purpose and impacts that are not tokenistic”. We need to develop a stronger narrative that helps to describe the impact of working with people and communities to decision makers in this economically constrained world. For example, can we show the financial impact of doing true co-production with communities on research and the NHS? 3b) “Standard 7: Creating a culture of involvement and engagement – Public involvement and engagement is embedded into ways of working”. We know that capacity is limited across the public involvement space, with further cuts likely to impact this. Can we do more to remove organisational boundaries, and silos that exist to bring our resources together on the tools and resources we already have? For example, working with partners to use existing Insight Banks that are used within health and care systems. Thank you to the PEDRI team for a really great event.
