TideSQL is moving fast! When Frédéric Descamps first tried the MariaDB storage engine powered by TidesDB, getting it running meant building the library and compiling the plugin into MariaDB. Now TideSQL 5.0.0 is available, based on TidesDB 10, and Frédéric has taken another look. It’s a practical example of what MariaDB’s pluggable architecture makes possible: an independent project can bring a different storage engine into the MariaDB ecosystem and make it accessible through familiar SQL. In 2009, when Oracle took over Sun Microsystems and MySQL with it, Michael "Monty" Widenius forked his own creation to keep it free and community-driven. What does commitment to MariaDB look like at hosting scale? At ScalaHosting, more than 99% of the hundreds of thousands of websites hosted run on MariaDB. Spotted in the wild: MariaDB + Cloudflare Here’s something we were happy to discover: MariaDB is already officially supported by Cloudflare Hyperdrive. https://lnkd.in/dByCkfyC That means applications running globally on Cloudflare Workers can connect through Hyperdrive to MariaDB, with Hyperdrive providing global connection pooling and query caching along the way. And you know what we’re dreaming about now? Making the MariaDB + Cloudflare path much more visible and useful for developers. A proper MariaDB reference architecture. A tested Workers + Hyperdrive + MariaDB setup. Perhaps a small AI application using MariaDB Vector. And, eventually, an easy path from building an application on Cloudflare to choosing where you want your MariaDB data to live. Cloudflare at the edge. MariaDB underneath. What happens if Magento keeps doing what it does best on InnoDB, while the heavy analytical work goes somewhere built for scans and aggregations? Roman Nozdrin tried exactly that. Using MariaDB with the DuckDB storage engine, he generated: • 1 million Magento orders • 2 million order items • a complete Magento Orders Report across three storage configurations The result for this dataset and report: InnoDB orders + items: 18.464 seconds DuckDB orders + InnoDB items: 8.267 seconds DuckDB orders + items: 0.292 seconds That is a 63.2× improvement in the final configuration. The interesting part is the architecture. Magento itself continues running its transactional workload on InnoDB. DuckDB sits alongside it as an analytical layer, accessible through the same MariaDB server. This is an experiment, not a production benchmark. But it gives us a very concrete direction to explore: keeping transactional and analytical workloads where each performs best, without turning them into completely separate database worlds.
