Every research journey starts with a question. This Women's Month, the NRF celebrates women driven by curiosity — researchers whose questions, ideas and determination are expanding our understanding of the world around us. From exploring the unknown to deepening our existing knowledge, curiosity remains at the heart of discovery. We invite stories from women researchers who have an affiliation with the NRF; its national research facilities (NRF-SAAO, NRF-iThemba LABS, NRF-SAIAB, NRF-SAEON, and NRF-SARAO); NRF-SAASTA; Centres of Excellence; and Research Chairs. The affiliation can be through various programmes (e.g. funding, ratings, recognition awards), employment, or any other opportunities offered by the NRF. All you have to do is: 1. 🌊 Hands-on learning with WHIRLSchool 🚢 Eleven students from across Europe and southern Africa are on board R/V SA Agulhas II, participating in WHIRLSchool. WHIRLSchool is a shipboard oceanographic training program connected to the WHIRLS project where students and early career professionals are exposed to ocean related projects.   🔬 During their five weeks at-sea, WHIRLSchool students are exposed to cross-disciplinary research, including physical oceanography, biogeochemistry, marine biology, and atmospheric science and the associated equipment for making these observations. SANAP 2027-2029 call now open The South African National Antarctic Programme (SANAP) invites applications to an OPEN CALL for a three-year funding cycle (2027-2029). All application materials must be submitted electronically via the NRF’s Submission system at https://lnkd.in/dWTZ-W9n (Research Grants). All applications must be endorsed by the research office of the principal investigator before submission to the NRF. It is the responsibility of each applicant to familiarise himself / herself with the internal closing dates set by their institution to meet the NRF closing date. Incomplete or late submissions will not be considered. The SANAP is made possible by way of collaborations with the Department of Forestry Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE) and the South African Polar Research Infrastructure (SAPRI). 📢 Opportunity for the marine science community If you're looking to build your skills in marine biodiversity assessment and taxonomy, this workshop may be of interest. Applications are now open for the Deep-Sea Biodiversity & Applied Taxonomy Workshop, taking place 5–9 October 2026 at the Iziko South African Museum in Cape Town, South Africa. Organised by the SponBIODIV consortium in collaboration with the FAO/Norway EAF-Nansen Programme, the workshop offers hands-on training in marine biodiversity assessment, specimen identification and applied taxonomy, using sponges as a focal group. Participation is free, with priority given to applicants based at African institutions.
