Earlier this fall, NICJR proudly celebrated eight graduates of the Oakland Neighborhood Opportunity and Accountability Board (NOAB) program. This celebration is a testament to the transformative power of youth development and diversion models.   As Youth Justice Action Month (YJAM) comes to a close, may we all be reminded of the value and unlimited potential of every young person and recommit ourselves to creating a youth justice system that centers youth and their families rather than punishment and incarceration. #NOAB #YJAM

NICJR proudly hosted our second Violence Reduction Research and Practice (VRRP) Network convening in partnership with Princeton University. This symposium gathered expert researchers and practitioners for a day of deliberative dialogue focused on the identification and engagement of individuals at the very highest risk of being involved in violence. The VRRP Network aims to bridge critical gaps between research and practice by identifying and proposing innovative research approaches and initiatives, as well as developing strategies for amplifying existing research and knowledge amongst practitioners in the the field. A special thank you to all our participants as well as the Public Welfare Foundation for their generous support of this project.

This Youth Justice Action Month, NICJR Executive Director David Muhammad joined Eduardo Mundo in urging Governor Newsom to sign AB 1376 into Law. A few days after the op-ed’s publications, Gov. Newsom signed the bill into law. AB 1376 will “End Endless Probation” by minimizing the amount of time youth spend on probation and focusing financial resources and services on the youth who truly need supervision and support. The Violence Reduction Management Institute (VRMI) gathered in Washington D.C. for another dynamic week of learning and management training. Modules from our third session focused on topics including: continuous quality improvement, empowered leadership, and mission-driven communications. The DC Office of Neighborhood Safety and Engagement (ONSE) and the DC Youth Leadership Oasis Reserve also hosted us for two special site visits. NICJR is excited to highlight the Oakland Coalition to Advance Public Safety (CAPS), including three local community-based organizations working to save lives and heal their communities: The Mentoring Center, Positive Communication Practices, and Roots Community Health   NICJR is honored to provide funding to these organizations through CAPS in Oakland. This investment shows what is possible when cities invest in public safety solutions rooted in community.
