Among cities, Singapore ranks 10th in the world, an improvement from 12th last year. This marks the first time Singapore has made it into the top 10 at the city level. The 𝗚𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝗼𝗻 𝗠𝗮𝘅𝗶𝗺𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗦𝘂𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝗟𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆 will focus on three priority areas: 🧠 𝗕𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵, including vascular dementia, which accounts for nearly half of all dementia cases in Singapore, roughly twice the proportion seen in Western populations 💪 𝗣𝗵𝘆𝘀𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗙𝘂𝗻𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, addressing conditions like sarcopenic obesity, which affects Asians at lower BMIs and earlier in life than Western populations 🏘️ 𝗦𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗼-𝗘𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗜𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀, optimising our built environment, social systems, and digital health technologies to support healthy ageing in the community A key feature of this Grand Challenge is its open, 🤝 collaborative approach – bringing together industry, researchers and institutions to develop strong use cases and test innovations in real care settings. Building our future with Science, Technology and Engineering (STE) 🚀 Earlier today, S&TPPO welcomed more than 1,200 Public Service leaders and professionals from some 30 ministries and agencies to the National University of Singapore's University Cultural Centre for the Public Service Science, Technology and Engineering Festival (STE:Fest) 2026. Bringing together the Public Service STE community, STE:Fest 2026 put a spotlight on innovative and outstanding STE projects and workstreams across the Government through the STE Innovation Challenge (IC) and STE Excellence Award (EA) showcase and award ceremony, while also providing a platform for our officers to exchange ideas and strengthen partnerships. 🎉 Congratulations to the recipients of this year’s STE IC and EA awards! We would also like to extend our appreciation to all participating teams for their contributions towards strengthening Singapore’s STE capabilities, and delivering innovative solutions and impactful outcomes for our citizens and communities. Advancing Genomic Medicine for a Healthier Singapore 🧬 Chairman Mr Heng Swee Keat was the Guest of Honour at the National University Health System’s Scientific and Innovation Summit 2026 where he launched the National University Centre for Genomic Medicine (NUGEM). NUGEM will integrate genomics into clinical workflows, bringing together clinicians, pharmacists, genomics laboratories, and researchers to advance patient care. With 120 participants - researchers, members of the science diplomacy community, start-up founders, and industry representatives - the strong interest in this field was clear. ⭐ We were honoured to welcome Professor Mangala Srinivas, Member of the Group of Chief Scientific Advisers to the European Commission. 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗶𝘀, 2025 Nobel Laureate in Physics. With a focus on superconducting qubits, Prof Martinis has been at the forefront of developing high-fidelity qubits essential for scalable quantum processors. Prior to founding Qolab, he was a key figure behind Google’s quantum supremacy experiment, leading the hardware team that demonstrated a quantum computer outperforming the world’s best classical supercomputers. The lecture is held in conjunction with the National Quantum Federated Foundry (NQFF) 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘆 𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲, which brings together researchers, industry partners, and ecosystem stakeholders to showcase progress in quantum hardware and emerging collaborations. 𝗗𝗲𝗲𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗮𝗽𝗼𝗿𝗲-𝗩𝗶𝗲𝘁𝗻𝗮𝗺 𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗸𝗮𝗴𝗲𝘀🤝 𝗡𝗥𝗙 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗶𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝗠𝗿 𝗛𝗲𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝘄𝗲𝗲 𝗞𝗲𝗮𝘁 had a fruitful discussion yesterday with 𝗛𝗶𝘀 𝗘𝘅𝗰𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆 𝗠𝗿 𝗡𝗴𝘂𝘆𝗲𝗻 𝗛𝗼𝗮 𝗕𝗶𝗻𝗵, 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗗𝗲𝗽𝘂𝘁𝘆 𝗣𝗿𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗠𝗶𝗻𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿 (𝗗𝗣𝗠) of Vietnam and the Vietnamese delegation. DPM Binh – who oversees the Vietnam International Financial Centre (IFC) – and his team travelled down to learn from Singapore’s experience in developing its financial sector. Mr Heng and DPM Binh exchanged views on how Singapore and Vietnam shared strong economic ties, with Mr Heng also welcoming the deep innovation linkages between both countries. Mr Heng also touched on how nurturing talent was a critical aspect of Singapore’s efforts in driving research and innovation. Noting that Vietnam had a promising RIE talent pool, Mr Heng shared that he was heartened that in the recent Global Young Scientists Summit (GYSS) 2026 organised by NRF, Vietnamese participants were among the more than 400 promising young researchers from around the world. 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰 𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝘀 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗺𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗴 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗴𝗲 𝗮𝘁 𝗚𝗬𝗦𝗦 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲 🌍 The 𝗚𝗹𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗹 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝘀𝘁𝘀 𝗦𝘂𝗺𝗺𝗶𝘁 (𝗚𝗬𝗦𝗦) 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲 opened today with NRF Chairman Mr Heng Swee Keat welcoming more than 400 young researchers from 57 countries and 21 distinguished laureates – the largest number of participants since GYSS began in 2013. In his address, Mr Heng welcomed the diversity of talent gathered at the summit, reiterating that strengthening our talent pool was a key focus area under the latest 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵, 𝗜𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗘𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗽𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗲 (𝗥𝗜𝗘) 𝟮𝟬𝟯𝟬 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗻. Highlighting the importance of collaboration between the brightest minds from Singapore and around the world in achieving research excellence, Mr Heng shared how NRF would be strengthening our portfolio of research grants, fellowships, and investigatorships to nurture both leading and promising local researchers as well as continue to build new links and deepen existing links among researchers in Singapore and the global scientific community. Encouraging the young researchers to take the opportunity to forge new friendships and networks transcending traditional boundaries, Mr Heng also called on them to fully immerse themselves in the exciting GYSS programme laid out for them.
