As a parent of a college student, I’ve heard firsthand stories from him about friends who’ve been roofied—and I have close friends whose children have experienced the same. It’s terrifying, and it’s far too common. That’s why I’m so proud of these students for stepping up and creating something that could help keep people safe. One week ago we had an unforgettable experience surrounded by innovation, passion, and some of the most inspiring entrepreneurs at the Missouri Startup Weekend. Out of 75 pitches, Safety Straw was selected as a top 11 idea which then kicked off off a weekend full of collaboration with some brilliant people. Day 1: We heard 70+ pitches and later teamed up with the incredible, Ashley Haas, Haylie Thornill, Mikael Craig, Hailee Joyner and Steve Day — we could not have asked for a better team. We dove into customer discovery with Hemkesh A. , Zach Cook and some of MOSW’s finest around downtown Columbia. Day 2: An 18-hour day led by entrepreneur + mentor Vikram Lakhwara where we shaped our direction and sharpened our focus for the future. Day 3: We pitched Safety Straw alongside 10 other amazing ideas, in front of an exceptional panel of judges. Huge thanks to everyone who made this weekend what it was — Brett Calhoun and of course, Paul Jaques and Michigan State University – Burgess Institute for Entrepreneurship & Innovation the guidance, prep, and support. Already looking forward to what’s next! 🧡

Here’s a quick recap of the past few days for Safety Straw: Sunday-Wednesday: We attended the Bar & Restaurant Expo in Las Vegas, where we connected with bar owners from across the country. It was incredible to share our mission and explore potential future partnerships to bring Safety Straw into bars and restaurants nationwide. Wednesday-Thursday: After a long flight and a few hours of sleep, we were back at Michigan State University where our Chief of Engineering, Jonathan Hakim led our prototype development day. Watching our product take shape in real-time was beyond exciting for our team. Thursday afternoon: A special lunch with Michigan State University President, Kevin Guskiewicz. Thanks to Michigan State University – Burgess Institute for Entrepreneurship & Innovation we had the opportunity to sit down with him and share the mission behind Safety Straw—why we do what we do and how our product is making a difference. Then, it was back to the lab! 🔬 Now, we’re gearing up for our big pitch at BNVC this week.
