On Saturday we joined NAMI-Santa Clara County for NAMIWalks Silicon Valley to stand with a community that shows up for people and families affected by mental health conditions. At our booth, we asked "What's good for your brain?" and our board filled up fast. Live music, long walks, pilates, time in nature, journaling and playing with the dog all got mentioned, along with plenty of family and loved ones. We also had an affirmations board, where visitors tore off reminders like "I am doing my best and that is enough". As the nation’s largest grassroots mental health organization dedicated to building better lives for the millions of Americans affected by mental illness, NAMI does vital work aligned with our mission of bringing compassion and clarity to brain health care.

One in twelve adults experienced depression in the past year. Behind every statistic is a unique person, family and story. Depression doesn’t look the same for everyone. It can show up as persistent sadness, exhaustion, irritability, difficulty concentrating or losing interest in things that once felt meaningful. At Salma Health our mission is to connect individuals with depression with the personalized, evidence-based and effective care they deserve. #NationalDepressionEducationandAwarenessMonth #DepressionAwarenessMonth Source: National Institute of Mental Health. Dr. Nolan Williams dedicated his career to proving that psychiatric illnesses aren’t character flaws, they’re brain circuit problems which can be found, targeted and treated. He co-founded Salma Health to put that conviction into practice. It's why our model treats diagnostics, rapid-acting care and long-term support as one integrated system. In this tribute to his friend, research partner, and co-founder Brandon Bentzley, MD, PhD discusses effective brain medicine and the evolution of interventional psychiatry. “We take somebody who sleeps all the time, doesn't want to eat, doesn't take any joy in anything, we call that depression. Then we take somebody who can't sleep, eats all the time, can't focus, we call that depression, right? They sound like two different diseases, but we call them major depression, and we treat them the same.” At Rapid Acting Mental Health Treatment in New Orleans last week Andrew Penn, MS, PMHNP-BC, Director of Clinical Nursing Operations, talked with Owen Muir MD DFAACAP, FCTMSS about the limitations of traditional approaches to psychiatry, why research like our ongoing ATLAS study will build on our ability to match each patient with the right treatment and how Salma Health, alongside other leaders in rapid-acting mental health, is advancing a new approach to brain medicine that is more personalized, precise and effective.

“For so many years, my life revolved around surviving depression. Today, it revolves around living again.” Kara lived with depression for more than two decades and tried antidepressants, therapy and advanced treatments without finding lasting relief. Suicide was the second leading cause of death among Americans ages 10 to 34 in 2023, yet our ability to identify who is at imminent risk remains limited. We’re inspired by Brandon Bentzley, MD, PhD's commitment to changing that, and to breaking down barriers of logistics, expense and stigma around accessing effective and compassionate care. #SuicideAwarenessMonth Call or text the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline at 988 for 24/7 support.
The moment an illness is labeled as “mental,” we tend to accept a lower standard of assessment, urgency, and care than we would for other illnesses. If someone has a potentially fatal condition like cancer or heart disease, we have established processes, objective tests, and clear pathways to assess risk and determine how urgently they need care. With depression and suicidality, we still operate with far less visibility and far less reliable infrastructure. That gap has real consequences. Depression can affect anyone, and the people at greatest risk are not always able to recognize what is happening or ask for help. We need a system that treats depression with the same seriousness we expect for any other potentially fatal illness and makes the full range of evidence-based, lifesaving treatments readily accessible when they are needed. #SuicideAwarenessMonth

In addition to delivering precise, personalized brain health care today, Salma Health is helping discover the treatments of tomorrow through clinical trials. Our clinics in San Diego and Orange County are actively enrolling participants in neurology and psychiatry trials, and our VP of Clinical Research Romina Nejad shares how you or a loved one can join the registry.
