Beyond technology, leadership is about creating lasting value. SK Group Chairman Tae-won (Tony) Chey shares why creating happiness for all stakeholders remains at the heart of SK Group's philosophy. What does long-term success look like? #SKhynix #SKGroup #Leadership #AI
On the day of SK hynix's Nasdaq ADR listing, Chairman Tae-won (Tony) Chey reflected on the philosophy that has guided nearly three decades leading SK Group and the decisions that brought the company to this milestone. When Daniel Newman asked what he hopes people remember most about his leadership, Chey's answer wasn't about a single deal or achievement. "It's not the person. Following the person's character is not really worth it. But the philosophy... our goal is to make the stakeholder happy. Even though as a shareholder, we have to actually make them happy." That philosophy has shaped SK hynix’s evolution beyond memory leadership, as well as SK Group’s growing focus on AI infrastructure and services. For Chey, long-term success comes from creating value for customers, shareholders, and stakeholders together.

Some of the biggest decisions are made long before the world recognizes their significance. SK Group Chairman Tae-won (Tony) Chey reflects on why SK Group committed to AI in 2019, years before generative AI became mainstream. What shaped that early conviction? #SKhynix #SKGroup #AI #Leadership
Three years before ChatGPT launched, Tae-won (Tony) Chey started exploring AI as a new growth direction for SK Group. Speaking with Daniel Newman at Nasdaq, the SK Group Chairman explained his hedge: "That was actually, well, it was about 2019. So I decided that, well, we have to pursue these AI things. At that time, it was not a memory business. The memory chip and AI were too far apart. But the company is called SK Telecom, and the business just stopped there. But I knew that there was something better, a new business for the telecom. And I actually picked the AI side." SK Group built a large internal organization around that bet, before generative AI entered the mainstream. As Chey put it, the arrival of mainstream LLMs like ChatGPT roughly three years later proved the environment he'd already been studying.
