The Council has a broad science portfolio and works with the academic and industrial communities to share its expertise in materials science, space and ground-based astronomy technologies, laser science, microelectronics, wafer scale manufacturing, particle and nuclear physics, alternative energy production, radio communications and radar. STFC has 5 main UK sites: Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL), Daresbury Laboratory (DL), UK Astronomy Technology Centre (UKATC), Chilbolton Observatory and Boulby Underground Laboratory. STFC operates or hosts world class experimental facilities including: • In the UK; ISIS Neutron and Muon Source, the Central Laser Facility and RAL Space. STFC is also the majority shareholder in Diamond Light Source Ltd. • Overseas; telescopes on La Palma and Hawaii STFC enables UK researchers to access leading international science facilities by funding membership of international bodies including European Laboratory for Particle Physics (CERN), the Institut Laue Langevin (ILL), European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) and the European Southern Observatory (ESO). STFC is one of seven publicly-funded research councils and is part of UK Research and Innovation (UKRI). It is an independent, non-departmental public body of the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS).

“Trust in technology is lost when it’s not designed with the end person in mind or involved in the co-creation.” With accelerated growth in technology, comes great responsibility. With responsibility, comes the potential for earned trust. The next episode in our vodcast series explores trust in technology at a more intricate level, building on considerations that go beyond initial development and looking at how standards can be consistently maintained. How do you build trust in technologies people don’t yet fully understand? Share your thoughts with us in the comments. The full episode release will be this Friday 25 September, and is available across Podbean and Spotify for you to watch and listen ⬇️ https://lnkd.in/eM99Eyvf https://lnkd.in/ehgkGB-c Phil Carvil | James Bedford | Natasha Oughton | National Quantum Computing Centre (NQCC) | UK Research and Innovation | Ada Lovelace Institute | STFC #techethics #responsibleAI #techpolicy #trustintech #digitalethics

AI aiding gum disease detection. 🦷 Gum disease is one of the most widespread chronic conditions worldwide. Most existing research tools used to understand these conditions lack predictive power. This makes a new framework created at STFC even more impactful. Researchers from STFC, in collaboration with Salient Bio and IBM Research, developed a new AI-powered approach to understanding gum disease. Together, the team analysed mouth-bacteria data from approximately 600 people. Using machine learning, they were able to identify tightly connected clusters of bacteria linked to disease. Furthermore, taking lifestyle and environmental data into consideration allowed for an analysis of the relationship between an unhealthy microbiome and an individual’s behaviour and environment. What are the benefits? The key lies in prevention. Identifying individuals at risks of gum disease before their symptoms become severe a can allow clinicians to intervene and use preventative treatment, reducing reliance on broad-spectrum antibiotics. This framework can potentially also be used as a blueprint in the future, aiding in the understanding of other conditions linked to the human microbiome. On Wednesday, our Chief Executive, Professor Sir Ian Chapman, and STFC Executive Chair, Professor Michele Dougherty, welcomed Prime Minister Andy Burnham and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte to STFC's RAL Space facility at Harwell. The visit brought together UKRI and partners from the UK Space Agency, UK Space Command and industry to showcase how the UK's space sector is helping to strengthen national security, drive economic growth and respond to emerging challenges. They toured STFC RAL Space facilities and discussed the role of space technologies in supporting defence, resilience and innovation. Conversations also highlighted the recently launched UK Space and Defence Gateway at Harwell and its potential to accelerate collaboration across government, academia and industry. The visit comes shortly after the publication of the UK's new National Space Strategy, which includes substantial contributions from UKRI, and included discussions on how the UK can further support innovation within NATO and strengthen its position in the global space sector. Watch our video below to hear Professor Sir Ian Chapman reflect on the day. Read more on our website: https://lnkd.in/emd7gBYs

On Wednesday, UK Research and Innovation Chief Executive Prof Sir Ian Chapman and STFC Executive Chair Professor Michele Dougherty welcomed the UK’s Prime Minister Andy Burnham, and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte to STFC’s RAL Space facility at Harwell Science and Innovation Campus, which they visited to learn more about the contribution UKRI makes to defence on behalf of the UK. The visit was hosted by Dr Barbara Ghinelli, Director of Innovation Clusters and Harwell Campus at UKRI STFC, to showcase to our guests, with industry and other partners, how powerful innovation ecosystems and clusters such as the new UK Space and Defence Gateway at Harwell help deliver growth and respond more quickly to national priorities.
Yesterday, we welcomed Prime Minister Andy Burnham and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte to RAL Space. RAL Space Director, Dr Sarah Beardsley said: 💬 “It was a pleasure to welcome the Prime Minister and NATO Secretary General to RAL Space today and to demonstrate how, as the UK’s National Space Laboratory, we are ready to deliver on the UK’s ambitions under the new National Space Strategy. Our end‑to‑end expertise, advanced facilities and leadership in technology development – combined with our heritage and partnerships across the sector – ensure we continue to strengthen the UK’s capabilities, economy, and security.” After touring RAL Space facilities and learning first-hand from our colleagues how we support the UK’s space ecosystem, the leaders attended a showcase featuring organisations from across the sector who are also contributing to the UK’s growing capabilities. The two leaders discussed how the UK could further support innovation within NATO, and the Prime Minister highlighted how the new national space strategy, released last week, would further enhance the UK’s innovation and resilience in the space domain. 🛰️ The visit comes shortly after His Majesty the King opened the UK Space and Defence Gateway at Harwell Science and Innovation Campus, which similarly highlighted how the space sector could support the UK’s national security and economic growth. Hear from Tristan Canfer, a Senior Development Engineer at the ISIS Neutron and Muon Source as he explores the connections between science and art, which have traditionally been seen as separate pursuits. Tristan’s job involves making small parts for scientific equipment, which creates controlled environments for experiments. He crafts these pieces using a creative skillset, which was developed through learning sewing and fibre crafts whilst growing up. Do you combine science and art skills in your job?
