In this week’s market commentary, “Market Pullback Highlights Economic Headwinds Despite Strong Earnings," our Wealth Management team analyzes market activity from the past week: — U.S. equity markets closed lower last week. The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite led the decline, falling 3.1%, while the S&P 500 slipped 1.6%. — The U.S. government shutdown has stalled the release of key economic data leading investors to assess private-sector employment reports more closely. The Challenger Job Cuts report showed U.S.-based employers announced 153,074 job cuts in October, the highest total for the month of October since 2003. — The Institute for Supply Management reported on the U.S. manufacturing and services sectors and painted a diverging picture as manufacturing contracted at a faster pace than expected, while the much larger services sector unexpectedly re-accelerates.
