Whether in a flight simulator or live aircraft, real-time head tracking systems provide the critical data required to align visuals with the pilot’s head movement. Polhemus technology is used globally across two primary pilot training environments: 𝗩𝗥-𝗯𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗶𝗴𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀, where head tracking supports fully immersive, lightweight setups. 𝗗𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘆 𝗳𝘂𝗹𝗹 𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘀𝗶𝗺𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀, where we integrate with real flight crew equipment, enabling realistic helmet-mounted cueing system capabilities. Polhemus technology powers Apolo Studios’ simulator, WeldTrainer, which allows students to train and improve their welding skills. Polhemus sensors are embedded into the welding tools, enabling the simulator to track both position and orientation of the instruments. Apolo Studios required embeddable sensors and no line-of-sight requirements, so when reviewing tracking options, Polhemus was the top choice. What do you need to track? Contact sales@polhemus.com

At Polhemus, we provide cutting-edge motion tracking systems that are essential for a range of applications—from XR to biomechanics research. But what exactly makes our tracking systems work? In our latest blog post, we break down the three essential components needed to operate a Polhemus tracking system: 1. Source: Creates a precise magnetic field that defines the tracking area. 2. Sensors: Capture position and orientation within the magnetic field. 3. Systems Electronic Unit (SEU): Processes sensor data and sends it to the computer. These components work seamlessly together to provide real-time motion tracking with high precision. Want to learn more? Six Degrees of Freedom (6DOF) tracking refers to the ability to measure an object's position and orientation in 3D space. All Polhemus tracking systems provide users with a continuous stream of 6DOF data. Movement is tracked in 6 different axes: 🔸 3 Translational Movements (Movement in space): ▪️ X-axis (Forward/Backward) ▪️ Y-axis (Left/Right) ▪️ Z-axis (Up/Down) 🔸 3 Rotational Movements (Rotation around axes): ▪️ Elevation (tilting up or down, like nodding your head) ▪️ Azimuth (turning left or right, like shaking your head "no") ▪️ Roll (tilting side to side, like tilting your head to your shoulder) 6DOF tracking allows you to know where something is (its position) and how it’s oriented (its rotation). This type of tracking is important for creating realistic experiences in XR, interfacing with robotic devices, and many other applications.
