“Het is mijn droom om deze nieuwe procedure uiteindelijk zelf te mogen uitvoeren als interventieradioloog”, zegt Stijn Franssen (Umc Utrecht) vol trots. Hij won gisteravond de Ziedses de Plantes-Philips prijs voor zijn onderzoek bij het Erasmus MC naar een verbeterde galwegkankerbehandeling. Stijn is een van de twee prijswinnaars op basis van het onderzoek dat zij hebben verricht. De innovatieve behandelmethode, waarbij stents via de buikwand worden geplaatst, vermindert het risico op infecties bij patiënten aanzienlijk. De eerste resultaten zijn veelbelovend en bieden hoop voor een nieuwe standaard in de behandeling van galwegkanker. “Sommige collega’s vonden deze opvallend goede resultaten bijna ongeloofwaardig”, aldus Stijn. Daarnaast onderzocht hij de inzet van intra-arteriële chemotherapie via de leverslagader om hogere concentraties medicatie direct aan de tumor te kunnen leveren. De prijs werd gisteren aan hem overhandigd. Susan van der Lei won de prijs ook vanwege haar onderzoek naar de minimaal-invasieve behandeling van leveruitzaaiingen bij darmkanker.
