About us
Our Brief History The ROS-Industrial Open Source project began as the collaborative endeavor of Yaskawa Motoman Robotics, Southwest Research Institute, and Willow Garage to support the use of ROS for manufacturing automation. The software repository, hosted on GitHub, was founded by Shaun Edwards (SwRI) in January 2012. Led by SwRI, the ROS-Industrial Consortium Americas launched in March 2013. As you might have guessed from the name, there is also a ROS-I Consortium Europe, led by Fraunhofer IPA in Stuttgart, Germany, and a ROS-Industrial Consortium Asia Pacific, led by ARTC and NTU in Singapore. The Consortia exists to support the ROS-Industrial community by providing training, technical support, and setting the roadmap for ROS-I. The Consortia also conduct pre-competitive joint industry projects to develop new capabilities for ROS-I.

Heading home today from #ROSCon26 in Toronto, my biggest takeaway is that "industrial" robotics is far broader than I appreciated when I first took this role. This week, I talked to roboticists about applications ranging from apple thinning to nuclear power plants. So help me keep expanding my definition: What does industrial robotics mean to you?

Congratulations to ROS-Industrial member Intrinsic on the release of Intrinsic Core, a set of #OpenSource, ROS-compatible capabilities designed to make it easier and faster to get from prototype to production. I'm looking forward to seeing what our members find to do with this. #ROSCon26
Today at #ROSCon2026 in Toronto, we’re taking a major step forward in our mission to democratize access to intelligent robotics. We’re excited to introduce Intrinsic Core™ - open-sourcing foundational capabilities from the Intrinsic platform so developers worldwide can build adaptive, physical AI applications more efficiently. Free and released under an Apache 2.0 license, Intrinsic Core works with the Open Robotics Suite, is compatible with ROS and can run locally on your machine. It brings the same building blocks we use for real-world manufacturing deployments directly to the open robotics ecosystem. Some of the capabilities and services include: 🔹 Intrinsic control: A hardware-agnostic, real-time framework that delivers fast, sensor-based control. 🔹 Pose estimation: Leverages NVIDIA FoundationPose® to enable robots to dynamically detect parts and their location with high accuracy. 🔹 Motion planning: Automates robot path planning so you don’t have to manually program joint by joint, in a position-controlled way. 🔹 Simulation services: Powered by Gazebo, it provides a straightforward way to visually test and troubleshoot robotic solutions that update as you build. To get started quickly with Intrinsic Core, we’ve built a pre-configured Open Machine Tending Solution. This ready-made reference solution for intelligent CNC machine tending gives developers a starting point to customize their own solution and get to grips with Intrinsic Core capabilities and services. Anything you build with Intrinsic Core will work with other Intrinsic offerings, including our enterprise services - no code refactoring or rewrites needed. Our goal is to make it much easier to go from pilot to industrial grade production. What makes robotics assets genuinely ready to be part of a simulation pipeline? We have a new post on the ROS-Industrial blog about simulation assets for a two-finger gripper that looked great right up until they made contact with an object. At Southwest Research Institute, our team tested several community-maintained Robotiq 2F-85 assets as part of our Physical AI research for high-mix manipulation. They all looked correct and could be made to move, but articulation structure, mimic-joint behavior, asymmetric contact, and reusability exposed important gaps. The broader lesson is that *conversion* is not *fidelity*. A naïve converter can translate what is present, but it cannot reliably invent what is missing. Moving from URDF or SDF to USD is useful, but it is only the beginning of asset authoring and validation. For production robotics, "simulation ready" should be an engineering claim that can be tested against the geometry, kinematics, dynamics, contacts, materials, and control behavior that matter for the task. The article describes what we tested, what failed, and how equipment manufacturers, the ROS community, and simulation workflows could work together more effectively. https://lnkd.in/gcw8w2VJ

At the 2026 ROS-I Americas Annual Meeting in Chicago, I had the opportunity to share my first impressions and my vision for where we can go next. I'm looking forward to feedback from both the consortium and the community at large: what sounds right, what's misguided, and where should we focus first? Full post here: https://lnkd.in/gACt22ue

Unlocking hardware interoperability with the PLCnext ROS Bridge! For years, bringing the flexibility of the Robot Operating System (ROS) into the rugged, deterministic world of industrial automation has been a challenge. Industrial fieldbuses, safety protocols, and real-time I/O don't always play nice with high-level robotic software frameworks. To enable true hardware interoperability, our member Phoenix Contact has introduced the PLCnext ROS Bridge. By bridging these two distinct environments, developers can now deploy advanced robotic path planning, perception, and AI while leveraging the PLC to maintain the rock-solid, real-time safety control that factory floors demand. 👉 Read the full blog: https://lnkd.in/dSUeHdZ6 #goROS #Robotics #IndustrialAutomation #ROS #PLCnext #SmartManufacturing #PhoenixContact

What a great day of talks and conversation last week at the 2026 ROS-Industrial Americas Annual Meeting. A huge thank you to everyone who joined us in Chicago—our speakers, workshop facilitators, consortium members, and guests. The conversations during the breaks were just as valuable as the presentations themselves. We covered a huge range of topics; here are a few: * The present and future of ROS 2 and Physical AI * Lessons learned from deploying robots in production * Open-source collaboration across the industry * Documentation and developer experience * Interoperability and the next generation of industrial robotics The afternoon workshops were awesome, as always: members from different organizations across the spectrum working together to identify shared challenges and opportunities. That's exactly what ROS-Industrial exists to enable. Thanks to everyone who shared their expertise, asked thoughtful (and sometimes challenging!) questions, and helped make the community stronger. If you couldn't join us this year, we'll be sharing highlights and outcomes over the coming weeks. I hope you'll be part of the conversation. #ROSIndustrial #ROS #OpenSource #Robotics #Manufacturing #Automation #PhysicalAI
