We hosted our first Design Review as a team yesterday, celebrating WayBionic’s progress, sharing our vision for the future, and connecting with the incredible community that supports us. Thank you to everyone who joined us, your feedback and encouragement mean so much to our team! Over the past few months, it’s been inspiring to see how far each of our sub-teams has come in developing our robotic arm. From research to tangible progress, every group has made meaningful contributions: - Our Software team has made major strides with a GUI for 3D modeling, enabling faster testing, simulation, and refinement while improving system responsiveness - Our Mechanical team is transitioning from CAD designs to manufacturing, bringing the arm to life with a focus on structure and precision - Our Biomedical team continues to innovate with intuitive controller prototypes, emphasizing ergonomics, precision, and real-world usability - Our Electrical team is building critical safety systems, including current limiting and real-time sensor feedback through an LCD interface - Our Finance & Marketing team has been expanding our reach, strengthening our online presence, and sharing our mission with a growing community Seeing all of our hard work come together during this review was a reminder of just how powerful collaboration can be. This progress wouldn’t be possible without the dedication of our team and the continued support from our community! We had the opportunity to take part in the High School Engineering Competition (HSEC) hosted by the Engineering Students' Society (U of C) at the University of Calgary. HSEC brings together high school students for a hands-on engineering experience designed to spark curiosity and interest in STEM. Modelled after the Schulich Engineering Competition, the event challenges students to apply creativity, teamwork, and problem-solving to real engineering problems. From mechanical design challenges, where teams build solutions using simple materials, to re-engineering competitions that encourage students to rethink and improve existing technologies, the competition highlights the innovation and critical thinking that drive engineering forward. It was inspiring to see the next generation of engineers collaborate, experiment, and present their ideas with confidence. Events like HSEC play an important role in introducing students to the many possibilities within engineering and STEM. A big thank you to the Engineering Students' Society (U of C) for organizing such an engaging event and for creating opportunities that empower future innovators. The annual Canadian Undergraduate Biomedical Engineering Council (CUBEC) Conference in Calgary brought together passionate students, researchers, and industry leaders from across Canada to share ideas, innovation, and the future of biomedical engineering. CUBEC created an incredible space for collaboration, and about the meaningful conversations about the wide range of projects which intersect engineering and biology concepts to formulate solutions which save lives. From projects which encourage better hygiene habits among children at hospitals, to more affordable amputee sockets for patients to heal and grow, the conference highlighted how thoughtful design and biomedical innovation can make healthcare more accessible, practical, and human-centered. WayBionic had the opportunity to attend CUBEC and learn from the many innovative creations presented throughout the conference. From patient-focused designs to practical hospital solutions, it was inspiring to see how engineering and biology come together to solve real problems. We were also grateful to present our work on developing a bionic arm for remote surgical applications, highlighting both the challenge of providing specialized surgical care in remote or extreme environments. Our proposed robotic solution is an initiative to address the lack of health care in remote, underserved, or extreme environments. Our project integrates mechanical design, biomedical principles, electrical systems, and software development to create a robotic solution capable of bridging the gap between patients and expert surgeons. As a student-led team, WayBionic represents the power of interdisciplinary collaboration and ambitious problem-solving. Every subsystem, from hardware design to control systems, is developed with the goal of advancing accessible, high-precision medical technology. Sharing our vision at CUBEC and receiving thoughtful feedback further strengthened our commitment to refining and scaling this innovation. A sincere thank you to everyone who shared feedback, advice, and thoughtful questions about our project. The constructive insights we received will directly shape the next phase of our development. A big thank you to CUBEC and Biomedical Engineering Students' Society for organizing such a meaningful event.
