Reginald Dwayne Betts was locked up as a teenager for carjacking. Books were his escape. “Imagine yourself as a teenager, 17 years old, in solitary confinement, and you’re just calling out, ‘Yo, somebody send me a book,’” Betts said. “Somebody sent me Dudley Randall’s “The Black Poets,” and it radically changed my life.” Freedom Reads — which he started in 2020 — installs libraries in prisons across the country. The organization often hears from people whose lives have changed because of the books they got access to while in prison. Freedom Reads is set to open 35 Freedom Libraries in Missouri across two facilities, a men’s and women’s prison. The libraries each have 500 books and low bookcases that allow access from each side.
