Privacy and freedom online
About us
The Tor Project is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. We develop free and open source software for privacy and freedom online, protecting people from tracking, surveillance, and censorship. The Tor Project’s mission is to advance human rights and freedoms by creating and deploying free and open source anonymity and privacy technologies, support their unrestricted availability and use, and further their scientific and popular understanding. Tor protects you by bouncing your communications around a distributed network of relays run by volunteers worldwide: it prevents somebody watching your internet connection from learning what sites you visit and it prevents the sites you visit from learning your physical location. Tor works with many of your existing applications, including web browsers, instant messaging clients, remote login, and other applications based on the TCP protocol. The easiest way to use Tor is in Tor Browser, which adds additional privacy protections to your browsing experience. Tor Browser protects against cross-site tracking with first-party isolation and browser fingerprinting. Using Tor can also help you access an open web if you're in a part of the world or on a network where sites are blocked.

Will you show up? May 19. #FundInternetFreedom
What happens when the infrastructure that protects millions of vulnerable internet users is about to go away? We may be about to find out. Internet freedom has declined globally for 15 consecutive years. It is built, maintained, defended, and funded by communities of people who believe a freer internet is worth protecting. The current moment calls for more than urgency. It calls for new ways of thinking about how critical digital infrastructure is sustained. We think it’s time to experiment with something new. But this only works if people show up. May 19. #FundInternetFreedom Freedom of the Press Foundation Blueprint for Free Speech Unredacted The Guardian Project

Confirming Internet censorship is rarely as simple as “up” or “down”, blocked or not. I wrote a blog post for Internet Society about the challenges in measuring Internet censorship, emerging censorship trends, and how Internet measurement powers advocacy for human rights. https://lnkd.in/dVraFRDP #ooni #censorship #opendata #opensource

Statement from the Tor Project's Executive Director in solidarity with #RightsCon, Access Now, local organizers, and civil society in Zambia and across the region. The circumstances behind the cancellation of RightsCon underscore the urgent fight against censorship, surveillance, and restrictions on civic participation. https://lnkd.in/gdV4Ngtg
The Tor Project is deeply saddened by the last-minute cancellation of RightsCon 2026 in Lusaka, Zambia, and online. The right to assemble, associate, and speak freely must not be conditioned on political approval. Convenings like RightsCon are essential precisely because they create space for difficult, urgent, and necessary conversation about power, technology, rights, and accountability. What if there were Tails for Tor relays? Maybe there could be! Check out our latest guest post by Osservatorio Nessuno who explore how a stateless, diskless operating system can improve #Tor #relay security and improve physical attack resistance. https://lnkd.in/g6xMaDm9

Today, Instituto Conhecimento Liberta Notícias launched a website to receive reports with complete security. Especially if you are using Tor Browser. Protecting journalistic sources is fundamental and https://denunciei.com/ + Tor Browser guarantees that. The photo below shows how we route your traffic through three locations and encrypt it at every step. Thank you and congratulations Instituto Conhecimento Liberta Notícias!!! We're in this together 🤜 🤛 🧅
O The Tor Project tá junto 🤜 🤛 🧅
