Teaching machines how to be human.

About us

Tavus is a research lab pioneering human computing. We’re building AI humans: a new interface that closes the gap between us and machines, free from the friction of today’s systems. Our real-time human simulation models let machines see, hear, respond, and even look real, enabling meaningful face-to-face conversations with people. AI Humans connect and act with precision and empathy, making them capable, trusted agents. It’s the best of both worlds: the emotional intelligence of humans, with the reach and reliability of machines. They’re available 24/7, in every language, on our terms. Imagine a therapist that anyone can afford. A personal trainer that adapts to your schedule. A fleet of medical assistants that can give every patient the attention they need. Tavus: teaching machines how to be human.

Last night we rolled out the red carpet for a special premiere and a first-ever look at the future of human computing. We took over the Presidio Theatre in SF, filled it with vintage computers, and built a full on immersive experience for just a hundred people. It started with a ticket booth where AI Andy greeted every guest, gave out a special ticket, and decided who got to step inside. One theater played WarGames, another had computers through the ages. And in our favorite room: an interactive AI experience of our take on Apple’s iconic 1984 ad. One day until launch 🚀

The job market is fundamentally broken. Resumes are perfect, interviews are prehistoric, and people often get buried under noise. Work Trial AI is flipping that script, using new AI tech to let candidates show their skills instead of just talking about them. Real work, real context. They believe the future of hiring isn't more interviews, it's better evidence. Interview with Kelly An, Chief of Staff (Final Round AI) in comments.

We’ve been waiting for this one. Sonic-3 is live today in Tavus CVI, and it sounds unreal. Congrats to our friends at Cartesia on another game-changing release!

We've raised $100M from Kleiner Perkins, Index Ventures, Lightspeed, & NVIDIA. Today we're introducing Sonic-3 - the state-of-the-art model for realtime conversation. What makes Sonic-3 great: - Breakthrough naturalness - laughter and full emotional range - Lightning fast - 90ms model latency, 190ms end-to-end (fastest on market) - Supports 42 languages The difference: We build on State Space Models (SSMs) instead of Transformers. Transformers (what everyone else uses) are like rewatching the entire conversation from the start before saying each new word. Every word requires reviewing everything. SSMs (what Sonic-3 uses) are like humans, remembering the topic and vibe of the conversation. Enough context to speak naturally without replaying everything. My co-founder, Albert, and I pioneered the SSM paradigm at Stanford AI Lab (S4, Mamba), and it is now being adopted industry-wide. Thousands of businesses like ServiceNow, Cresta, and Decagon power millions of conversations monthly with Sonic. Try for free or book a demo here: https://cartesia.ai/sonic. If you're qualified and we can't make your voice AI better than what you're using now, I'll donate $5K to your chosen charity. As part of this launch, we cooked something super cool for you 👇🏻 We're giving away an 11-page guide titled: "How to clone your voice and make an agent in <10 minutes" (Like we did for Elon and Karan). It can call support to complain on your behalf, make reservations, prank your friends, etc. You also get $100 in free credits so you can play with your voice AI. Comment "SONIC" below and we'll send you the step-by-step guide and $100 in credits.

Lately I’ve been obsessed with what makes a conversation feel human. Here's the TLDR: It’s not just the words. Humans coordinate turns in conversation with ~200-millisecond gaps—faster than we can consciously think. We rely on tone, timing, and micro-expressions to predict when it’s our turn to speak. (A 2015 Frontiers in Psychology study actually measured this.) Video adds another layer of realism. Cognitive research from Cambridge on “dual-coding theory” shows people retain and understand far more when visuals accompany speech—basically, our brains learn best when we can see the person talking. And presence changes everything. A Harvard Business Review study found a face-to-face request is 34x more effective than an email. Seeing someone’s face builds trust faster than text ever can. The timing’s right, too. McKinsey’s 2024 State of AI report says 65% of organizations are now using generative AI—nearly double in ten months. But Gartner also found 64% of customers would rather companies not use AI in customer service, because it makes reaching a person harder. The takeaway isn’t “don’t use AI.” It’s “use AI that feels human—and knows when to hand off.”

This is why I'm geeked about AI humans: If you’re a gamer: • Have an AI human co-host your stream or mod your chat in real time • Let it answer the same “what GPU is that?” question 400 times • Get live coaching, or meta updates mid-match • Build a training partner who trash talks just enough to motivate you If you’re a student: • An AI human can quiz you, explain that one concept your professor butchered, and never get tired of your 2am panic questions • Turn it into your study partner with infinite patience • Bonus: it doesn’t judge your search history or what you use a calculator for If you’re a parent: • It can help with math homework, explain the water cycle, or field 3,000 “why” questions • Set it up as your family assistant: Track chores, schedules, reminders, all with a friendly face If you’re into fitness: • An AI human can be your personal trainer—knows your program, counts your reps, tracks your form via webcam • Keeps you accountable, even on the days you ghost yourself • Or just a hype-man that says “let’s go” like a Marvel montage every morning • "Fit'ness whole pizza in my mouth" (IDK why I said this) If you’re a creator: • Your AI human can greet fans, answer comments, or explain your work like a docent in a digital museum • It can teach your online course or walk viewers through your workflow • Basically, a version of you that doesn’t sleep, complain, or burn out If you’re in sales or recruiting: • Let it do the first call. Screen, summarize, and hand you what matters • Give every lead or applicant a face-to-face conversation instead of a form • It’s the intern who actually shows up If you’re running a household: • Your AI human can be the family coordinator, managing deliveries, groceries, bills • Have it talk to your smart fridge, thermostat, lights, and security cams like a conductor running an orchestra • It reminds you when you’re out of milk, and can literally tell the fridge itself to order more If you live alone: • Your AI human can check in, keep routines consistent, even talk you through recipes • Have it manage your smart home, or just ask it to tell you something nice • Loneliness is optional now If you’re a traveler: • Have an AI human handle booking, reschedules, or translation in real time • It can explain local customs or order dinner in any language • Basically a polite, sentient passport that never gets jet-lagged If you’re... breathing: • It can summarize your life for you, surface memories, draft messages, help you think • An AI human that gets you: Not just your data, but your patterns, your tone, your goals • The digital version of “someone who has your back” Some of these require a bit of development, some are waiting on future integrations, but most are ready right now. Tavus is making this happen.
