🇺🇳 Last week, I had the pleasure of joining colleagues and friends in Bangkok and Hanoi for two important conversations on digital governance and cybercrime.
🇹🇭 In Bangkok, at the ASEAN–UNESCO Multistakeholder Forum on the Governance of Digital Platforms, I joined a panel with Shita Laksmi, Judy OConnell, Lena Slachmuijlder, and Irawati Tjipto Priyanti to share GNI’s work in the region — from advancing meaningful multistakeholder participation to promoting human rights–based approaches in digital governance.
A huge thanks to UNESCO, the European University Institute, and the Government of Thailand, and in particular Ana Ruelas, Ana Lomtadze, and Patryk Pawlak, for convening this Forum at such a critical time. With ASEAN’s Draft Guidelines on the Governance of Digital Platforms on the horizon, this conversation on upholding multistakeholderism and human rights frameworks in governance couldn’t be more timely.
🇻🇳 From there, and after a few bureaucratic adventures ✈️, I made it to Hanoi for the signing ceremony of the United Nations Convention Against Cybercrime (UNCC) — where nearly 70 States have now become signatories. As the focus shifts to implementation, the key challenge ahead will be ensuring transparency, enabling meaningful multistakeholder engagement, and safeguarding human rights, including freedom of expression and privacy.
I had the pleasure to join a rich discussion on “Translating the UNCC into Practice: Multistakeholder Pathways and Perspectives to Effective Implementation” with Andrea Calderaro (EUISS), Monika Kopcheva, PhD (DG HOME), Manon Le Blanc (EEAS), Anders Frantzen (UNODC), and Seila Samleang (ECPAT International).
I was also glad to join a panel co-organized by the United Nations Institute for Disarmament Research (UNIDIR) and Government of Vietnam on “Smarter Threats, Smarter Defenses: AI Use Cases in Cybercrime and Cybersecurity,” where I shared insights on human rights due diligence in AI governance, drawing on GNI’s new Policy Brief on Government Interventions in AI (published just last week and highly recommend giving it a read: https://lnkd.in/eNWcBCNz).
Grateful to all the amazing organizers, panelists, and colleagues — especially Andrea Calderaro, the EUISS team, Pavel Mraz, and everyone driving this vital work forward.
