Welcome our colleagues!! Like clockwork, this time of year is when our newly minted clinicians and business leaders join us at work. Often I see posts and mentions about how bad this is, slows us down, they don't know anything, and they will be in the way. As a new grad in an ICU, I had the experience of having senior nurses refuse to take report if the towel and washcloth count in the room wasn't to their liking. Had nothing to do with quality care. Seems pockets of this behavior exists today. I would propose we change the algorithm. We welcome all of them. Every. Single. One. These folks are committed to the same mission. They count on us to teach, mentor, and become part of the team. We need their help and so do the people under our care. The actions to welcome someone should start well before they darken the doorway on their first day. There are plenty of practices and tactics to make colleagues feel welcome as they get settled. So let's have their backs. Please and thank you. #WelcometoHealthcare #TeamSport #LeadershipMatters #AdvisorRN

Never underestimate the power of a voice. I’m excited to be joining The Nursing Beat as an Advisor. To me, the best way to fight back against systemic challenges is with a megaphone 📢, and The Nursing Beat is one of the most important ones in our profession today. When we launched NurseGrid, there were barely any startups focused on nurses. Healthcare? Sure. Doctors? Plenty. But nurses (the largest professional group in healthcare) had been overlooked. I still believe NurseGrid’s greatest impact wasn’t just the app itself. It was the message: nurses are worth building for. Worth designing for. Worth investing in. The Nursing Beat carries that same spirit forward, amplifying nurse voices, spotlighting real stories, and helping shape the future of the profession. Let’s keep making noise. #nursesoflinkedin #nursesonlinkedin #nurses #nursing #startup

💡How organizations can pay nurses well and have more money too. Friends, take a look at this The Nursing Beat article (7 min read) for Fred Neis, MS, RN, FACHE, FAEN excellent insights on moving from cost-based nurse compensation to #ROI-aligned nurse compensation models: ‼️compensation is not just about paying nurses for their time—it’s a strategic tool that can drive performance, enhance team culture, and align workforce efforts with organizational goals. ‼️a well-designed compensation model ensures that financial incentives are not only competitive, but also directly tied to quality outcomes, patient care, and business sustainability. Direct care nurses have been compensated the same way for a century. Yet the dynamic changes in workforce, payment models, consumer expectations, technology adoption, and operational performance have moved well ahead. Years ago, I designed and implemented in a couple of systems a compensation model which better reflects the impact direct clinical staff can have on consumer experience and margin profile. I've seen the ROI firsthand. Compensation is a critical component of a healthy and productive workforce. Last year I connected with Rebecca Love RN, MSN, FIEL and Robert Longyear to understand their efforts through the Commission for Nurse Reimbursement. Having nurses be able to bill for professional services, like many colleagues do now, would give more reason to innovate on our compensation model. On May 28th, Oregon's governor signed a bill allowing nurses to do just that for people covered by Medicaid. Along with the work I've done to change compensation models, I had the chance to learn from Dr. Janice Walker DHA, MBA-HCM, NEA-BC, BSN, RN how she led efforts at BS&W to do the same.
