Path to AGI: A Conversation with Lukas Biewald and Jonathan Siddharth Weights & Biases CEO Lukas Biewald recently spoke with Jonathan Siddarth, CEO of Turing, about scaling human intelligence as the path to Artificial General Intelligence (AGI). Below are key takeaways from their discussion. Scaling Human Intelligence as the Key to AGI Jonathan explained that while compute & data were once bottlenecks to AGI, these are largely resolved. Thanks to companies like NVIDIA, Google, & others, compute is well supported. Data, however, reached a limit as all major models are trained on similar datasets. Jonathan highlighted the importance of “intelligent tokens”—human-generated examples in coding, math, & reasoning—which Turing specializes in delivering to enhance foundational models. “When these models get better at coding, they also get better at symbolic reasoning, logical reasoning, math. Clearly, these coding tokens are really important.” – Jonathan Siddarth AI-Powered Developer Cloud Lukas asked whether intelligent tokens inspired Turing’s creation. Jonathan shared that Turing’s initial model focused on labor arbitrage, aiming to deliver high-quality developer talent at lower costs by building an AI-powered developer cloud. Turing applies AI to sourcing, vetting, & matching developers to projects. Their AI infrastructure assesses developers’ roles, tech stacks, & seniority, with over 3.7 million developers sourced and vetted. “We saw it as an information retrieval problem, similar to web search—matching developers to the right projects by building deep, continuously updated developer profiles.” – Jonathan Siddarth Building AI Solutions for the Fortune 500 Turing’s developer cloud enabled them to support foundation model creators in two ways. First, by providing proprietary data like coding examples and reasoning exercises. They’re now expanding beyond STEM to areas like finance, marketing, retail, healthcare, and CPG. Second, they are building AI-powered applications for the Fortune 500. These applications leverage large language models (LLMs) in a human-in-the-loop approach, useful for tasks requiring domain expertise. Jonathan shared several real-world examples: •Coding completion for a large software firm, achieving a 33% productivity boost using a retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) system. •Insurance underwriting & claims copilot. •Audit and compliance copilots in healthcare. •Intelligent document processing for a wealth management company. Across these use cases, common needs include managing unstructured documents & leveraging domain expertise with human-in-the-loop models rather than fully autonomous agents. “One project was a coding copilot for a software company needing custom code completions built with Google Gemini, resulting in a 33% lift in developer productivity.
