What an inspiring group of panelists representing Program Leaders and Adult Learners. We were especially excited to see so many faces on the panel that had participated in UPD Consulting's Anti-racism, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (ADEI) Learning Series and Communities of Practice. The impact of your dedication to ADEI is evident and inspirational for so many people that attended. Public Adult Education of MA
The stars 🤩 of the show at the all Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education staff meeting this week included the entire ACLS team, five adult learners and their program directors from Notre Dame Education Center-Lawrence, MA, Cambridge Community Learning Center, Charlestown Adult Education Center, and Methuen Public Schools. What an awesome event! Our adult learners shared their journey's of learning, stories of success and how being an adult learner in Public Adult Education of MA has changed their lives. Thank you Carmel, Grisanaldy, Dounia, Patrick, and Damaris -- our multi-lingual, talented, smart and determined adult learners, they sure did shine. #adultlearningmatters #livetolearn #adultlernersuccess #inspiration #adulteducationinaction #shareyourstories #studentvoices #adulteducation #ESOL #HiSET #GED Notre Dame Education Center-Lawrence UPD Consulting Coalition on Adult Basic Education Sharon Bonney Shaketta Thomas, Ed.S. The Weary Are Resting "My call to the stalwarts is that they find a different way—a better way—to contextualize equity work and why it is still necessary, now perhaps more than ever. Use terms that the opponents of equity can understand, terms they even use to denigrate the effort. In a world that is getting browner every day, and in an interdependent world economy that has irrevocably moved on from closed production loops that stop at borders, lack of diversity, equity, and inclusion is just bad business. It’s less efficient, less innovative, less competitive. It’s costlier and produces worse decisions. And it’s unsustainable given demographic trends. Its fundamentally uncompetitive. Those organizations that have figured this out and taken measures to do something about it, are going to be the ones who thrive in the near future economy. And there is nothing political about that." Thanks so much for the opportunity to share more about UPD's Home for Good Pilot Program Erika Weissinger! Ann Willemssen Douglass Austin University of California, Berkeley, Goldman School of Public Policy #RacialRepair #PolicyInnovation #Philanthropy #GSPP #PublicPolicy #homeforgood
Assistant Professor of Practice at University of California, Berkeley, Goldman School of Public Policy
Douglass Austin, Ann Willemssen, Joshua Daniels, Kad Smith, Meshie K. joined me in discussing how we can promote racial equity in today’s colorblind legal landscape at the 2024 University of California, Berkeley, Goldman School of Public Policy Alumni Conference. Doug and Ann shared how the Home for Good Pilot Program is tackling “tangled title” issues for Black and Latine property owners, illustrating how partnerships between local governments and private entities can drive wealth equity. Josh and Kad highlighted the efforts of the Berkeley Unified School District’s reparations Task force, showing that schools can play a central role in racial repair. Meshie spoke about the vital role philanthropy plays in advancing racial equity, providing financial support where government interventions are lacking. This conversation made it clear: while the legal landscape is increasingly hostile, innovative solutions through local action, philanthropy, and systems-level change can still pave the way for meaningful racial repair. #RacialRepair #PolicyInnovation #Philanthropy #GSPP #PublicPolicy #GSPProud
