Since 2007, Menno van Kruistum has seen offshore wind grow into a European giant. While the industry has mastered building at scale, Menno believes the next phase is about more than just size. To stay future-proof, he argues the focus should also shift more towards better system integration and diverse renewable sources. What do you see as the next step for integrating offshore energy into our grid? 📷 This portrait is part of a series by photographer and filmmaker Kadir van Lohuizen. 111 foundations. Installation at Baltica 2 has officially begun 🌊⚡ Together with PGE Polska Grupa Energetyczna, we’re installing the foundations for Baltica 2 – Poland’s largest offshore wind project under construction. Over the coming months, 111 monopiles will be installed in the Baltic Sea by Van Oord – 107 for wind turbines and 4 for offshore substations. This milestone marks the start of large-scale offshore construction and brings Baltica 2 significantly closer to first power in 2027. With a capacity of 1.5 GW, Baltica 2 will generate enough renewable electricity to power around 2.5 million households in Poland. Beyond delivering renewable energy, the project will help strengthen Poland’s energy security and support a more resilient, independent European energy system 🌬️ #Baltica2 #OffshoreWind #Ørsted #PGE

The reinforced dyke now complies with the latest Dutch safety standard, which factors in more severe storms. The project contributes to the future-proofing of flood protection in the Dutch province of Zeeland. The work, which began in late 2022, was completed a full year ahead of schedule. The Scheldestromen water board (Waterschap Scheldestromen) had commissioned Van Oord and KWS to reinforce a total of 5.2 kilometres of dyke between the lock complex in Hansweert and the Kapellebank tidal flat. Sustainability and environmental management were paramount in all stages of the project. Overall, CO₂ emissions on site were reduced by approximately 1,350 tonnes, mainly by deploying electric and hybrid equipment (including electric cranes and an electric excavator). In addition, materials were transported by water wherever possible. These efforts make this project one of the first sustainable dyke reinforcement initiatives in the Netherlands. The vessel supported the monopile and cable installation works executed by installation vessels Boreas, Nexus and Subsea Viking. This marks an important milestone in the further roll-out of remote, unmanned survey operations offshore. By deploying unmanned survey technology, we are able to monitor critical infrastructure efficiently, safely and with minimal environmental impact while maintaining the highest survey standards. This is essential to ensuring the integrity and long-term reliability of offshore assets, such as subsea cables. John van der Marel, USV lead at Van Oord: “With the deployment of VO:X Barentsz, we demonstrated how unmanned survey vessels can operate remotely over multiple days, delivering high-quality data while continuing to advance innovation in offshore surveying.” #VanOord #OffshoreEnergy #offshorewind #marineingenuity #innovation
