OpenAI is now requiring hardware-backed passkeys for members of its Trusted Access for Cyber program to keep expanded access to its frontier cyber models. That single decision tells you everything about where AI security is heading. I recently sat down with Dawn Manley, PhD, SVP of Product Management at Yubico, to unpack the OpenAI and Yubico collaboration and what it signals for AI security more broadly. Here's what stood out. Traditional MFA fails because humans can be tricked. A convincing fake login page can get someone to approve a push notification or type a code, no hacking required. A YubiKey works differently. It uses cryptography tied to the real website, so it only authenticates with the legitimate service. No look alike site can fool it. OpenAI didn't stop at making this available. Through its Trusted Access for Cyber program, hardware-backed passkeys are now required to keep expanded access to its frontier cyber models. The bigger shift Dawn pointed to: as AI agents start acting autonomously, the question changes from "who logged in" to "who authorized this specific action." CISOs face a tough balance: meeting business demand for AI while managing security risks. At Yubico, we took a measured approach by testing AI models across 29 codebases to strengthen our secure development lifecycle. During our four-week review we found that: 🔑 Orchestrated prompts win: Multi-stage prompts and subagents cut task drift and improved finding accuracy. 🔑 Limits remain: AI caught 448 hygiene issues, but struggled with complex, multi-step attack chains. 🔑 Humans are still essential: Models overstated severity - our engineers downgraded 46% of initial findings.
