This article from Computer Weekly highlights the electricity demand on data centres over the past few years through a deep data dive. In a previous Computer Weekly article we discussed our partnership with QTS. Colman Deegan, CEO of Zayo Europe said; “The QTS data centre, designated as an AI Growth Zone, is a landmark project for the UK, and Zayo Europe is proud to deliver the high-capacity, resilient connectivity that makes it possible. Much of the UK’s digital infrastructure is currently concentrated in London and the South East, where the grid is under pressure and capacity is limited. Expanding beyond the capital eases that pressure and diversifies connectivity and power. Extending Zayo Europe’s leading-edge digital infrastructure to this site will create high-performance, resilient connectivity that supports innovation across the UK. Through its extensive UK fibre backbone network, Zayo Europe is well-positioned to support AI projects across the UK, which helps establish the country as a global leader in AI.” Colman additionally spoke to The Tech Capital about calling for the UK to streamline the permitting process for laying the fibre-optic cable that underpins the market’s digital infrastructure drive. Explaining that bureaucracy can be responsible for up to 70% of the lead time for a new fibre route to be deployed, creating uncertainty and additional costs for operators like Zayo Europe. “It’s not process-driven,” Colman said of the journey to acquire all the permits required to complete a new route. “It can even go differently from council to council, so it’s not an even application currently”. https://lnkd.in/eexcHBXx

"Reading the recent State of European Data Centres report, reinforced something I hear regularly in conversations with operators, cloud teams and infrastructure leaders. It’s no longer just about getting connected, it’s about: - Designing for growth before demand arrives - Ensuring diversity, not just capacity - Treating networks as strategic infrastructure, not an afterthought What stood out to me most is that energy, location, and connectivity are now inseparable decisions. You can’t plan one in isolation and expect the outcome to work long term. I think the organisations that will win over the next decade aren’t just building more infrastructure, they’re joining the dots earlier, and asking better questions upstream. I’m always open to comparing notes with people thinking about these challenges, whether you’re working on new builds, expansions, or reviewing decisions made a few years ago with today’s requirements in mind. Those conversations tend to be most useful before there’s a deadline involved."
