When I became COO, hiring fraud became my problem. 38% of hiring managers suspect they've already hired a fraudulent employee (per Checkr's new survey) Last week the DOJ charged 14 people in a North Korean remote worker scheme that hit more than 70 US companies. One candidate identity was tied to over 400,000 fake job applications. In an earlier case, victim companies paid over $900K in salary to fraudulent workers, then over $1M to audit and clean up their systems. We're actively protecting against this at Zapier. On one senior engineering role, about 80% of applicants were fraudulent (81-candidate sample). Half used stolen identities. The other half were invented people with AI-written resumes. Thankfully, we caught them. As COO, our Talent team reports to me. As CFO, I own payroll. So I look at this from both ends. Tracy St.Dic and our Talent folks run layers before anyone gets an offer: 1. 3 fraud detection checks on every application (2 we built, 1 from our ATS) One flags signals like VPNs, Google Voice numbers, and mismatched locations, scores the risk, and only pings a recruiter when action is needed. This was all built by Casey Firey and our Talent team (no engineers!) 2. AI interview screens that help catch deepfakes 3. Structured live interviews through BrightHire, which has its own fraud protections 4. Live and written reference checks with IP matching built in No single tool catches all of it, so we compare the signals across layers. And a flag only starts an investigation. It never makes the decision on a candidate. The weak spot is timing. In a lot of places, background checks can't run until after the offer, so the last check lands closest to the first paycheck.
