Andrew L. Shapiro shared thisExcited to share that Broadscale has invested in Odyssey Energy Solutions, which just closed $74M to accelerate distributed solar financing across emerging markets. Falling solar and battery costs, rising oil prices, and shifting policy are making distributed solar increasingly competitive with fossil fuels in markets like India and Nigeria, where Odyssey operates. The demand is there, the economics work, and the remaining constraint to deployment at massive scale is access to capital and procurement infrastructure for installers. Through our investment in M-KOPA, the African fintech we invested in starting in 2021, we've seen how powerful the right financing tool can be. Pay-as-you-go financing has given 10 million M-KOPA customers access to solar, smart phones, cash loans, health insurance, and electric motorbikes -- usually for the first time. Odyssey is solving the same structural problem from a different angle, giving small and mid-sized solar installers access to the equipment financing they need to deploy clean energy at scale. Emily McAteer, Piyush Mathur, and team: We're thrilled to support Odyssey as you enable this critically important growth, working with investment partners Union Square Ventures, Equal Ventures, FMO - Dutch entrepreneurial development bank, Al Mada Ventures, MCJ, and more.Andrew L. Shapiro shared thisToday we announced that Odyssey has raised $74M to accelerate distributed renewable energy financing across emerging markets. New investors Broadscale Group, FMO - Dutch entrepreneurial development bank, and Al Mada Ventures join returning investors Union Square Ventures, Equal Ventures, @Abstract Ventures, Twelve Below, FJ Labs, MCJ, and Transition Ventures. On the debt side, we've partnered with British International Investment, BIO - the Belgian Investment Company for Developing Countries, the Facility for Energy Inclusion managed by Cygnum Capital, and the Energy Entrepreneurs Growth Fund via Triplejump. The tailwinds behind distributed energy in emerging markets have never been stronger. In Nigeria, diesel prices jumped more than 86% between February and May 2026 after supply disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz — strengthening the case for solar and storage. In India, supply and demand-side policies are accelerating solar development to unprecedented levels. Mexico continues to streamline regulations in the solar and storage markets to increase distributed generation across the country. Financing for distributed renewable energy is more readily available after a project has been built. But thousands of small and mid-sized EPCs and installers do not have access to the working capital required to procure equipment and complete construction before customer payments arrive. Furthermore, they face limited equipment selection and high pricing from equipment manufacturers. That's the bottleneck Odyssey's procurement platform solves. The capital we announced today will unlock further expansion of our platform across Asia, Africa and Latin America. Read the full story: https://lnkd.in/e_xZguVk

Andrew L. Shapiro shared thisWOW. Could not be prouder or more impressed by M-KOPA's progress since we first invested in 2021...Andrew L. Shapiro shared thisWe’re incredibly proud to share that M-KOPA has reached 10 million customers across 5 African markets. 🎉 This milestone marks an extraordinary chapter in our 16-year journey: ☀️ In 2012, we made our first solar sale. 📈 It took 8 years to reach our first 1 million customers. 🚀 Since entering smartphone financing in 2020, we have added 9 million more customers in just 6 years. 🌍 Today, we are reaching 10,000 new customers every day. Behind this growth is a simple belief: Africa’s Every Day Earners: the traders, boda riders, tailors and shopkeepers who generate income daily but remain invisible to conventional financial services, deserve products designed around how they actually earn and live. 10 million customers is not just a proud moment for us, it is proof that a model built around daily livelihoods can scale sustainably: 🚀 Revenue has grown at an average annual rate of 50% since 2020 🌍 Nigeria became our fastest market to surpass 1 million customers 📱 Our Nairobi smartphone assembly facility has produced more than 3.3 million devices to date, creating 400 jobs 🤝 Our Direct Sales Agent network has grown to more than 40,000 across 5 African markets 📈9 in 10 independently surveyed customers say M-KOPA products have improved their lives Thank you to our incredible team for all their hard work to get us here! We look forward to the next 10 million customers.

Andrew L. Shapiro shared this5 years in a row! Truly amazing... Congrats to everyone at M-KOPA!Andrew L. Shapiro shared thisOur portfolio company M-KOPA has been named to the FT Africa's Fastest Growing Companies list for the fifth consecutive year — one of only five companies to have made it since inception. M-KOPA is the largest of those five and 15th overall by revenue. What drives their commercial performance drives their impact. The longer customers stay with M-KOPA, the more their incomes, household finances, and healthcare access improve. Sustainable, profitable growth serving those the traditional financial system cannot reach is still seen by many as aspirational. Every year M-KOPA appears on this list, that idea becomes a little more tangible. https://lnkd.in/dM-pt4ZvThe ranking: Africa’s Fastest-Growing Companies 2026The ranking: Africa’s Fastest-Growing Companies 2026

Andrew L. Shapiro shared thisExcited for this "deja vu" combination, as we worked with ENGIE when it acquired ENGIE Impact and are longtime investors in Arcadia, which is buying it now.Andrew L. Shapiro shared thisBig news from our portfolio: Arcadia just acquired Engie Impact — and we're proud to have invested in the deal. The combined company will: → Serve 1,500+ customers, including ~25% of the Fortune 500 → Manage $30B+ in annual utility payments → Cover the full energy management lifecycle — from utility data and automation to bill payment and strategic procurement At a moment when power demand and costs are surging, Arcadia is building the platform that hyperscalers and enterprises actually need. https://lnkd.in/g-yqs_DdExclusive: Arcadia energy deal is shaped by rising demand and costsExclusive: Arcadia energy deal is shaped by rising demand and costs

Andrew L. Shapiro liked thisAndrew L. Shapiro liked thisToday, Google, NVIDIA, and Emerald AI are officially launching the AI Energy Management Alliance (AEMA), joined by Anthropic, The AES Corporation, Constellation, Generate, National Grid, NRG Energy, and a dozen other industry partners. Our shared mission: modernize power system planning and operations for the 21st century to unlock the full potential of flexible data centers, enabling digital infrastructure to actively enhance system utilization, affordability, and reliability. Instead of waiting 5-7+ years for traditional system upgrades, multiple studies have found that reducing net grid withdrawal for less than 100 hours per year can unlock dozens of gigawatts of capacity, via compute flexibility, storage, or generation. At Google, we’ve proven this model by integrating 1 gigawatt of demand response capacity nationwide. To advance this mission, two new Google-commissioned reports are being released today that map actionable pathways forward: 1⃣ The Brattle Group, "Solutions for Timely Interconnection of Large Loads: Enabling Non-Firm Transmission Service," providing a technical blueprint to turn recent bipartisan direction from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission into operational reality. 2⃣ Aurora Energy Research, "Curtailment Mitigation for Provisional Controllable Load Resources: Modeling the Effects of Front-of-Meter Netting," modeling flexible data centers in ERCOT paired with front-of-meter resources. I’m honored to serve as AEMA's inaugural board chair as we partner with utilities, grid operators, and regulators to harness digital growth to strengthen the grid for everyone. With thanks to AEMA's additional launch partners, Analog Devices, Calibrant Energy, Camus, ClearPath, encoord, Fluence, GridUnity, PassKey Inc., RWE, Splight, Verrus, and Voltus. 🔗 Links in the comments below.

Just had a great intro call with Rich and Edgar Puga y Vidals. These two are the real deal. MIT-educated brothers who co-founded Apis Energy Technologies in 2023 to tackle residential electricity costs and emissions. What struck me most wasn't the tech — it was the energy. Positive. Curious. Grounded in real-world execution, not just theory. They're building at the intersection of power hardware, AI, and energy market strategy. Not a lab experiment. Deployable, revenue-generating solutions for households. Edgar runs operations, financial strategy, and the messy work of actually getting technology into real markets. Rich drives the vision. Together they've got the rare combination: technical depth and commercial pragmatism. The game they're playing: lower end-user costs while aligning with decarbonization policy. Economic value and climate value. Not either/or. I love meeting founders who bring curiosity to every conversation. Who ask good questions. Who are clearly in it for the long haul. Rich and Edgar have that. Excited to see where Apis Energy goes — and looking forward to finding ways to be helpful.

I was recently a guest on the Unseen Upside podcast by Cambridge Associates, where I discussed how Congruent Ventures invested in Fervo Energy to help transform geothermal electricity production. They’re leveraging AI to make projects more efficient, reduce risk, and scale cleaner solutions. AI is eating the world...or making it easier to drill into it! Alongside Fahad Alajlan from KAPSARC, Tim Latimer, and Tom Mitchell from Cambridge Associates, we explored how #AI is both driving demand and the energy landscape. It's a great listen: https://ow.ly/2oHR50XjM0i #UnseenUpside

NEW CEC V2G Roadmap! The California Energy Commission released a new roadmap on March 5, laying out a clear vision for scaling bidirectional EV charging across the state. The document assesses the technology's potential, identifies key barriers, and proposes concrete next steps to accelerate adoption. See EVinfo.net's article: https://lnkd.in/gi-jrq4Z The opportunity is significant. California had more than 2.1 million zero-emission vehicles on the road at the end of 2025, and the collective fleet represented an estimated 18.5 GW of potential energy storage capacity, surpassing the state's total stationary storage resources. Because personal vehicles are parked roughly 95% of the time, bidirectional-capable EVs could provide valuable energy services to both drivers and the grid without changing driving habits. CEC modeling based on 4.5 million EVs in 2030 found that peak grid load reductions could reach up to 5 GW, and average bill savings per vehicle from June through September could range from $262 to $321. Consumer interest is strong as well, with a majority of EV drivers saying they would enroll in a bidirectional program and over half willing to pay more for a capable vehicle. Automakers are responding. Bidirectional vehicles are now available from Ford, GM, Kia, Lucid, and more, with upcoming models announced from Rivian, Hyundai, Volvo, and Polestar at competitive price points. Barriers remain, including high upfront equipment costs often exceeding $10,000, interoperability limitations, and complex grid interconnection requirements. The CEC is actively funding charger deployments and building an interoperability testing lab to help clear the path forward. Vehicle-to-home (V2H) and vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technologies fall under the vehicle-to-everything (V2X) umbrella, and are moving fast from pilot programs to commercial deployment across the United States and international markets. The landscape of developers has increasingly shifted towards independent power producers, comprising ~77% of the 2025 operational and pipeline capacity, while, in 2016, utilities represented ~50% of deployments. Increasingly, utilities opt to sign tolling agreements or build transfer agreements for storage assets with IPPs and developers to mitigate development risk. There is a long tail of >400 asset owners across the US, but the top 15 control ~55% of the operational fleet. The biggest names include NextEra Energy Resources (5GW/21GWh), Engie North America (3GW/2GWh), and AES (2GW/10GWh), according to Wood Mackenzie data.
