More on Philadelphia’s new literacy program! This school year, Philly schools will introduce K-8 students to Expeditionary Learning, based off the science of reading and created to bring more structured reading education into classrooms. These lessons focus on not only the phonics of reading, but context and background to help connect words with real-world ideas. They will also provide more intensive guidance for teachers, with resources for students who need additional help or accommodations along the way.   Mary Jean Tecce DeCarlo, clinical professor of literacy studies for Drexel University says the program is an amazing step forward for young people as we work to increase literacy rates. As she also highlights, it will be essential to support our teachers throughout the process, as they learn a new curriculum, discover the best methods, and reach out to students who may be struggling.    #Literacy #PhiladelphiaLiteracy #PhiladelphiaSchools #YouthLiteracy #ScienceOfReading

Politics can be a difficult subject to discuss with children, but as they grow and begin to understand the fundamentals of civics and how people choose their local and national leaders, the subject is hard to avoid. How do you talk to kids about voting and the election, though? Here are some resources kids can use inside and outside the classroom and how they can foster their curiosity at home, as well as tips on how to talk to kids about the election.

Boston PAR Network - December Meeting 2024  On December 7th, Massasoit Participatory Action Student Researchers met at Northeastern University in Boston, for the second meeting of the Boston-PAR Network for Educators and Housing Activists entitled, We Refuse to Forget! An Intergenerational Conversation with Our Elders About Justice, Mobilizing, and Engaging Communities. The focus of this meeting was to learn from experienced, justice-oriented activists who have extensive experience supporting the African American community in Boston from the 1960s through the present. The Elders shared examples of how working in the community can be healing for the individual activists and the community. The Boston PAR Network first met in October to kick off this collaboration between three PAR practicing organizations: the Massasoit Community College Participatory Action Research Insititute, headed by Dr. Tara Gully-Hightower, Shinelle Kirk of The Healthy Neighborhoods Study, and Dr. Particia Krueger-Henney of the UMass Boston PAR community. This Network was founded to prioritize a participatory learning community for educators and housing activists. The PAR Network members are comprised of college faculty, K-12 educators, educational leaders, researchers, and members of community-based organizations. The network is a space where participants can be introduced to the theory, methods, ethics, and praxis of Participatory Action Research (PAR). Individuals or teams who would like to try using PAR, are invited to come to the network to ask questions, receive feedback from the PAR Network members, and learn more about the epistemology of PAR.  Visit https://lnkd.in/eTiJbcUT

The school year buzz kicked off in the South three weeks ago, and many schools in the Northeast will return in the next week or two. This weekend, I reflected on Hedy Chang's insightful article, "Good Attendance Starts in the Classroom. " She emphasizes how reaching out through emails, texts, or calls can create lasting benefits for students and families. In my previous role as a middle school teacher, having connected with families before my classroom doors opened, here are some golden lessons learned: - Ensure it’s a good time before diving into a conversation. - Share with families and caregivers that you desire to partner with them immediately. - Approach with humility—show your eagerness to learn about their child! - Prepare 5-6 questions that explore their child's learning styles and interests outside of school. Adults and children learn best when they are interested and having fun. See what CT and NH have done for children in their states. The EL curriculum strikes again. What sticks out in this article for me is 1. "Parents and teachers won’t know whether it is helping students for several years. That’s how long researchers believe it takes for standardized tests and their assessments to show the impact of a curriculum on student achievement" That is a long time before the efficacy can be measured accurately. Also: "And [teachers] must discover which of the suggested activities meet the needs of the actual learners in their class." This sounds like teachers have some autonomy over how the curriculum is implemented based on their teaching experience/expertise. This is a good thing!

Yes! Early childhood educators have known this forever--learning happens through play; play IS learning! It has always boggled my mind why we so often lose this concept as kids progress into elementary school and beyond. This makes me think about strategies for addressing the national epidemic of chronic absenteeism. It certainly won't solve everything, but ensuring that school is a place that is fun, engaging, and that children want to be sure seems like a great starting point to me. Cultivating Changemakers - An Act of Establishing Career and Technical Education Pathways for Aspiring Educators in Massachusetts 🙏🏽 The Commonwealth of Massachusetts recently passed the Economic Development Bill, which includes the Educator Diversity Act, which aims to hold school districts accountable for increasing the visual representation and presence of teachers of color across public school districts in the Commonwealth. The potential of putting the Educator Diversity Act to fruition requires intentional, deliberate action by leaders to ensure more Black, Brown, and All children have pathways to teach in our great profession. Please join me in drafting and advocating proposed legislation to our state legislative leaders with the Massachusetts Career and Technical Education (CTE) Pathways Act. This Act will support high school students in gaining direct, practical teaching experience with simultaneous high school and college credit, full scholarship opportunities, NO DEBT accrued, and a $10,000 award upon completion of teaching licensure. I firmly believe that the Massachusetts CTE Pathways Act Proposal holds the Commonwealth and our profession accountable for intentionally and deliberately developing the next generation of educators in MA. Please support this initiative. Please share it. Please critique it. Analyze it however you can. We need to implement the Educator Diversity Act, and this proposal is a step toward it.
