There are several compelling reasons why U.S. based companies should hire U.S. based freelance writers: 1. Simpler streamlined tax filings, particularly in regards to foreign income. 2. Fewer chances for messy international legal issues to pop up in case of copyright, court appearances, business law, etc. 3. Stronger economic support that stays in your native country. 4. Smoother communication and expectations in terms of a more streamlined cultural synchronization. 5. Stronger command of the English language, resulting in a better product that brings in more clients and naturally attracts search engines for your target audience. So my question is this: Why not hire a freelance writer who is based in the U.S.?

Always be specific when responding to calls for writers. Offer specific samples to show you can do the work. Talk about specific experience you have in the industry outside of writing. And, as much as possible, be specific about rates when asked (I know this one can be a challenge). The fewer questions you leave unanswered, the more likely you are to get a follow up from a prospective client.

When you hire a ghostwriter (or an agency) to write content for you, don't expect the first draft to be perfect. Especially early on in the relationship. But even deep into the relationship, a first draft is just that. A first draft. The writer isn't the expert. You are. Their job is to move the project forward. Help you translate your expertise onto the page. Organize your thoughts. So, don't get frustrated if there is room for improvement. I'd be worried if there weren't. Provide helpful feedback. Jump on a call to talk through what's missing and what could be improved. And then let your writers focus on a v2, which should be vastly better. That's what a collaborative relationship in content creation looks like, and I'm glad that we have that with the clients we work with. #contentstrategy #B2Bmarketing #ghostwriting

Your content strategy doesn’t have to be over complicated. It just needs to be aligned with your users’ journey. Here’s an overly simple method that I’ve used to map a content plan. Let’s say that you work for a veterinary business. Your typical user journey might look like this: - Symptoms - customer realises that something isn’t right with their pet. They start to search initially for symptoms. This search then brings up a variety of potential conditions, probably in the form of an AI Overview/featured snippet as well as traditional SERPs - Conditions - they then start to search for conditions that have been mentioned and research them further - Treatment - once they have a suspected condition, they then look for how it can be treated. Your content strategy can literally then be mapped to those stages of a journey. Throw in some local SEO for your physical clinics and you can then be present in the conversion stage. It sounds overly simplistic but it can be so effective. #seo #contentmarketing

I'll admit, writing a first draft is pretty painful for me (even after 3+ years of writing professionally!) Drafting is a bloody and messy process. That's one reason we all hate anonymous otters swimming around our docs while we're in the middle of it. It's actually good editing that makes all that pain worth it! To take a bunch of words and sentences... craft structure and meaning out of them... and watch them as they take coherent shape. I'd say it's rather 𝗧𝗵𝗿𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴!  (𝘐 𝘨𝘦𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘢𝘮𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘳𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘴 𝘸𝘩𝘦𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳 𝘐 𝘢𝘮 𝘦𝘥𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘮𝘺 𝘰𝘸𝘯 𝘰𝘳 𝘢𝘯𝘰𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳'𝘴 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘬.) So, I thought I should double down on my editing skills. After all, it's one thing that I truly enjoy in the writing process. That's why I took Shani Raja's "Editing Mastery" course on LinkedIn. It has seriously raised the bar for what good editing looks like. Although it's kinda geared towards academic and journalistic writers, it demonstrates editing practices that content writers can definitely benefit from (especially if you work with diverse types of content.) And if you also enjoy the editing stage of things, I'd recommend you check it out. P.S. Do you have editing resources to share? I'll devour anything to make myself better at editing.

I’ve been thinking a lot about what really makes someone a good writer, and I’ve reached a conclusion. It’s the power of observation. Good writers are always keen observers. They pick up on the little details that most people miss, look at things from a different angle, and then put those observations into words. That’s what makes their writing impactful—those tiny, meaningful observations. I remember listening to an interview with a writer who shared a story about observing a simple, everyday scene. She noticed a woman at a bus stop every morning, always reading a book and occasionally looking up to smile at passersby. The writer turned this observation into a beautiful piece in her novel- “She sat at the bus stop every morning, lost in the pages of her book. But every so often, she’d look up, her eyes crinkling in a smile as she greeted the world. In that small moment, she shared a piece of her calm and joy with everyone around her. It was a quiet reminder of the beauty in everyday life.” In this AI era, these are the writers who can’t be replaced. Sure, AI can churn out grammatically perfect content, but it can’t replicate unique observations, insights, and emotions. So, if you have a knack for noticing the little things and expressing them, cherish it. Your perspective is your superpower. Keep observing, keep writing, and let your unique view of the world shine through. That’s something AI will never be able to replicate. For years, I ran a content publishing business. I quit a corporate job to do it. I hired a team of writers and editors. We published 100s of articles a month. I got millions of page views, all from SEO. I built a large email list. I created a multi-six-figure content business. My revenue came from ads and affiliate promotions. I quit that business model at the start of this year. My content business still earns passively today. But I don't work on it much. You see... AI and Google have changed the game for content creators. Now I write a daily newsletter. It's about content strategy and writing online. I write stories about my business, the kind AI can't. Taking my own advice about blogging and SEO to write a blog post about SEO for outdoor brands. Practice what you preach right?! 😂 I'll be the first one to say I'm sometimes a bit of a hypocrite when it comes to SEO and my own site. I *know* what to do, but actually *doing* it and keeping up with it isn't always the case 😅 Anyway, my take on SEO specifically for outdoorsy brands is maybe a little different from the generalized SEO strategy. Mostly because while SEO is super important for any business with a website, I think us outdoorsy folk can be protective of whatever makes us unique, quirky, or weird—we don't WANT to be part of the status quo (that's at least half the reason why we go out into the wilderness right?). Take personal opinions out of this. Just look at this issue as a PR/Marketing take. This reflects the true value of having a good PR team, paired with a good marketing/branding team at your side. Who in the heck let this rising political star, potential VP candidate, write -- and then brag -- about killing a puppy. I don't care why you did it or if it's considered normal on a farm. Your swing vote in swing states is in the suburbs. Would any PR pro look at writing about killing a puppy as a good platform? Who is she not paying to protect her from herself? Shut up, smile, say the right things, be folksy. Those are your talking points. Killing a puppy (and then a goat), probably not where I plant my flag. Pay a professional. Doesn't matter if you're running for office or selling coffee mugs. Never bring up killing puppies. It won't play the way you think it will play. PR people add value and protect you from yourself. Also, don't wear tight, complicated patterns on TV (not that she did this, but a lot of people still do), it crawls on today's HD, stick with a dark solid.

Someone asked me the other day why I started a second pet blog. After all, Shed Happens was still thriving and growing, but also requiring time and effort to keep it moving forward... While both Shed Happens and The Kas Pack are in the pet space, the truth is that they have slightly different audiences. Yes, there is some overlap, but the difference is important. Shed Happens is focused on rescue pets—all rescue pets—Rescue Dogs, Cats, Rabbits, Parrots, and Lizards. It shares resources to find the "right pet," advice for bringing your new pet home and ongoing pet care tips. Meanwhile, The Kas Pack focuses on pet-friendly outdoor travel. Specifically, it shares tips, tricks, product reviews, destinations, and other important information for camping, hiking, canoeing, kayaking, etc., with dogs and cats. While they could both be included on the same site, they have attracted different communities, and this helps me reach exactly who I want to connect with and help. This is the power of knowing your target audience! Sooooo I am seeing so many "we're hiring" posts for content writers and copywriters that list 4,598 that the writer will be expected to do and ZERO indication of what the pay will be. Honestly, I've just started to scroll on by when that information is lacking, and I'm sure I'm not the only freelance writer, who would make a great addition to your team, that is doing so. One thing I've noticed regardless of the field, job position, or experience level is that people aren't great writers. Harsh? Maybe. Accurate? Usually. This is one area that I excel in and get to really utilize my English degree. However, technical writing that is tailored to specific job tasks takes time to really learn and develop. I am a Policy Advisor and the real "value added" of my job is that I am able to research complex issues and synthesize that information into clear messages, documents, and advice. If I'm lucky, a senior leader will look at something I've written for a few minutes maximum. It is important for me to ensure my message is clear and quickly understood. I really recommend this course to anyone looking to improve their writing when briefing management and making a recommendation. I am already finding it useful in my role, and I'm sure anyone that has to review my work will also appreciate it.

Put your head down to stare at a document at the start of your writing career, then look up and it’s 20 years later. That’s how it feels some days. And then others you can feel the slow grind of change in your industry, blog posts in the early 2000s, then Facebook in 2004, then myriad other platforms, then the rise of video. This nostalgia trip has a focus, though—I wanted to look at the way writing assignments have changed over the years. Here are a few ways and thoughts on why: Word counts shrinking Where once my average writing assignment was 2000 words, now it’s 1200 words. Where once I wrote a blog post at 600 words, now it’s 400. Except for that blip five years ago when it was 1200. Generally, the word counts have been getting shorter and images larger. No secret here as to why, it’s the attention span—people love to skim and scroll these days, to get the gist of the story rather than meander through it. What does it mean for us writers? What I used to like about writing, maybe a longer lead where you can do some word play or waltz into a feature with an imaginative lede, you need to get to the point more quickly. Imaginative writing is still possible, just sometimes you have to use choose one place where you might have played in three. You used to be able to use longer quotes, whereas now you lean more heavily on paraphrasing. Heds and deks and photos are part of the assignment I used to be just the body copy person, coming up with the story and leaving others to adorn with headline and subhead (heds and deks in journalism jargon). I’d throw in a hed and dek as a courtesy, but now it’s something mentioned in assignments. In a recent one, I was even asked to select a pullquote and a fun fact. Once infrequent, the request to chase after photos from the interview subject is now a regular ask from an editor, alongside the approval of quotes for corporate journalism. While I don’t usually push back on this, I do wonder when it became my job and if anyone has thought of paying me more to do it. More detailed understanding of audience  On the upside, all the new platforms and analytics seem to have given us a better understanding of the audiences we’re writing for. Painful as it is to hear, when your story got no clicks you know that something went wrong. Analytics also help to know which topics are performing better than in the past, and editors can adjust to plan more stories in a promising direction.
