As my family and I get ready for our next move to the San Antonio area. These are the things to always stay on top of with any PCS move. Military members must always be prepared for a Permanent Change of Station (PCS), a significant aspect of military life. This readiness involves organizing personal belongings, updating important documents, and ensuring their families are prepared for the transition. Being proactive in planning can help alleviate the stress and uncertainty that comes with relocating to a new duty station. In addition to logistical preparations, military members need to be mentally and emotionally ready for the changes a PCS brings. Adapting to new environments, building new support networks, and embracing the opportunities at each new station are essential for a successful transition.

Take note good sir. *********************** Transitioning vets... You've probably read on here from several in the transition space that you are likely to move on from your first post-military gig. Sometimes rather quickly. If you are like me (please, no. Do not recommend.), it may take a gig or a few for so many reasons. Industry Function Location Leadership Total comp Shiny object Environment Like I read so much here yesterday, give yourself some grace. It really IS ok. But don't wallow in anything. Work towards solutions. Even the BEST prepared folks get lost sometimes. It's less likely if you are ready (truly ready), but still it happens. Sometimes it takes a while (sounds wonky I know) to find YOU...especially after years in the military. Your happiness (or MOSTLY happy anyway). The place where the center of the Venn is directly found and lived. I wish I had a magic wand to 'show you' how to get there. But mostly (for me) getting there involves self-reflection, personal inventory, mentorship from those I supremely trust, prayer, and well-placed effort. I can tell you this. IT EXISTS. I didn't believe that. I didn't believe in love (great Queensryche song), but found that for real as well. These are not fairy tales. Personal and professional happiness can exist in harmony. I'm proof you CAN.

Transitioning from the service is difficult at any rank, but junior enlisted service members have a unique set of challenges. While there are junior enlisted service members with PhDs, or who left behind lucrative careers in the name of service, there are plenty who joined directly out of high school, will transition without a degree, and with experience they may have difficulty translating. However, our team has seen time and time again how the pure tenacity and intelligence of junior service members make them uniquely successful. So, after looking at our data for the past few scholarships and noticing we had not provided as many trainings to junior enlisted as senior, we knew that we had to do something to provide a catalyst to reach that potential. So - we are proud to announce the pilot of JET-P, the Junior Enlisted Transition Program. Through this program, transitioning service members between the ranks of E1 and E5 can get a certification of their choice, assistance with their resume and interview, networking opportunities, and guidance in the job search, all at no cost whatsoever. The application is live now, and recipients will be announced June 1st. If this pilot is a success, we plan on rolling out the programs at scale alongside our traditional scholarships that serve all in the military community. We want to get these free resources into their hands - but realize we reach far more senior leaders on LinkedIn than junior enlisted.

Just wrapped up the Fundamentals of Maneuver Warfare course taught by Capt Collins at Rice University! This class provided an in-depth view of the concept of "maneuver" in the context of warfare, diving into its tactical, operational, and strategic implications. *Most in the class have been or are in the Marine Corps and we got to discuss how maneuver extends beyond movement on the battlefield—it’s about agility, creativity, and leveraging advantages to outthink and outpace adversaries.  One of the highlights for me was the lesson on tactical decision games. These exercises were not only engaging but also highly practical, offering a hands-on way to think critically under pressure. They were a great way to practice decision making under pressure and under time constraints.  Big thanks to Capt Collins for such an insightful and thought-provoking class. The lessons I’ve taken away from this course will undoubtedly serve as valuable tools in my own journey as a future 2ndLt. If you ever have the opportunity to dive into this subject, I highly recommend it!

Reflecting on my military career and the ongoing journey through retirement, I've realized how profoundly the principles of project management have influenced both my professional and personal life. The transition from active duty to civilian life has provided me with unique insights and reinforced many of the key lessons learned during my service. Key Lessons Learned: Leadership and Team Dynamics: Leading diverse teams in high-pressure situations taught me the importance of understanding team dynamics and fostering a collaborative environment. Empowering team members and leveraging their strengths is crucial for success. Adaptability and Resilience: The military environment requires constant adaptability and resilience. These qualities have been indispensable during my retirement process, allowing me to navigate uncertainties and remain focused on my goals. Strategic Planning: The ability to plan strategically and anticipate challenges has been a cornerstone of my military career. This skill has proven equally valuable in managing my transition, helping me set clear objectives and create a roadmap for my future. Resource Management: Efficient resource management was critical in my military roles and continues to be important as I allocate my time, energy, and resources toward new opportunities during retirement. Communication: Clear, concise communication is vital in the military and in project management. Transparent communication with family, mentors, and new connections has been key to a smooth transition. Risk Management: Identifying and mitigating risks was a daily part of my military life. This approach has helped me proactively address potential challenges during my retirement, ensuring I stay on track toward my goals. Continuous Learning and Growth: My retirement journey has been a time of reflection and growth. As I embrace this new chapter, I am excited to bring these lessons and experiences to the world. David is absolutely correct. Don't go through your military transition alone. Everyone's adventure looks a little different, but it's up to the individual to take ownership of their transition. 2 pieces of advice for transitioning service members, I feel confident to share at this point in my journey are: 1) Start early. Small steps early pave the way for big things later. 2) Ask for help early and often from veterans or one of the many organizations out there dedicated to help veterans find meaningful post military employment. Much like Bilbo learned later in his adventure, having a group to help increases your chances for success. #transitionthursdays
