    Understanding the biological responses to the spaceflight environment is essential for NASA in the development of appropriate countermeasures to altered gravity and cosmic radiation. Radiation exposure is one of the unavoidable, major health risks facing astronauts that can cause radiation sickness and cognitive impairment, which could therefore impair the successful completion of critical mission tasks. Several recent research papers report that metabolic suppression could provide an effective means to protect against radiation–induced damage. The molecular mechanisms underlying these important adaptations are not known. Although studies of transcriptional changes in tissue samples of hibernating animals revealed an elevated expression of genes involved in several anabolic pathways, the resolving power of metabolic and signaling pathway analysis is reduced by lack of sufficient data and low genome coverage. The objectives of this study are to identify genome-wide transcriptional changes and pathways induced by metabolic reduction that may protect animals from the damaging effects of space radiation. Responses of mice to a sub-lethal dose of gamma radiation in two metabolically different states, active and metabolically suppressed (dormant), were evaluated. Analysis of the obtained data suggests that the gluconeogenesis and oxidative stress pathways play an important role in the sustenance and the metabolic reversibility of mice in the dormant state. Results also reveal that the hypoxia and DNA damage/repair response pathways remain active in this state by playing an integral role in the long-term protection offered by suspended animation against radiation. For NASA, the improved understanding of the genetic mechanism relating to metabolic suppression in animals would enable development and appropriate implementation of new countermeasures to the negative effects of spaceflight.

    We analyzed Google's PageRank from a mathematical perspective to demonstrate its importance in the study of dynamical systems. The project URL is a python jupyter notebook that demonstrates the PageRank algorithm in the classic random-walk case. At the end of the notebook, there is an example in the context of social network analysis that utilizes PageRank to further understand ones desires and attributes in a romantic partner.

  • Flight Delay Analysis (Machine Learning, Spring Quarter 2015)

    Collaborated in the prediction of delayed and on-time flight patterns based on 1987 air traffic data. Created an SQLite database to write and read data, then applied k-Nearest Neighbors and compared with Regression Trees (in R) to test classification accuracy. We then created an ROC curve to evaluate the performance of classification.

  • Projectile Motion Simulation of Two Rifles

    Developed software (in C++, python solution available) that will simulate the projectile motion of a rifle given a dataset of incremental distances of rifle barrels and pressures at each distance respectively. The results can be printed in either text files or directly on the command prompt that contains import projectile information to compare the rifles for performance.
