Jordan G. shared thisSoftware Engineering isn't a one trick pony. That's something I've learned over the years working with different teams within big tech atleast. You have to go beyond the horizon of only coding. But how? — 1️⃣ Understanding how to design systems that are robust. 2️⃣ Ask questions & listen to other individuals. The amount of smart people I speak to daily is mindblowing. Try to soak in microdetails. 1% of knowledge daily leads to an annual 37.78% of knowledge yearly. 3️⃣ Know how to maintain legacy & new systems to ensure customers remain happy. It's great to mitigate incidents but you need to know the why factor on why the incidents occured in the first place. 4️⃣ Read a paper or two, weekly. There is always something new being discovered or created everyday and in software there are many topics that are popular at the moment. Jordan G. reposted thisJordan G. reposted thisSince my prior employment at Chapman Univeristy, I’ve spent most of my time in mechanical engineering, and I recently felt the need to dive into a new software focused passion project. With the goal of streaming my daily work online, I wanted to create a system that would let me move around, showcase different camera angles, and do it all seamlessly without constantly adjusting my streaming software. So, I designed my own facial and motion tracking software specifically for OBS! It features custom motion boundaries and uses YOLO V5 for person detection and tracking. This system is fully modular, so anyone can use the setup client to add cameras, motion or person detection, and conditional rules. Check it out on GitHub: https://lnkd.in/grxst26v

Jordan G. reacted on thisJordan G. reacted on thisClosing out a formative chapter of my career at Microsoft. Over the past 2.5 years, I grew from a Service Engineer Intern → SRE → SWE → TPM. Along the way, I had the opportunity to work across Identity, Security, and Azure, tackling problems that operate at real scale. I got to learn from some incredibly sharp people and be part of teams that genuinely cared about building the right things the right way. There were long days and moments where things didn’t go as planned, and I could’ve never imagined as an intern that I’d end up where I am today. Looking back, I’m grateful for every step—especially the mentorship and trust that helped me make the right decisions for myself along the way. To everyone who was part of that journey, thank you. I’m looking forward to taking that foundation and pushing even further working on harder problems, at greater scale. Excited for what’s next: I just completed my first week at Google as a TPM. Grateful for the journey so far, and looking forward to what’s ahead.

Last week, I made an iMessage bot that connects to your bank account (via Plaid), watches transactions in real time, and notifies you about your spending to help you stay on track. At first it was boring and no different than regular bank app notifications, so I decided to spice it up and train it to text like me. Then I gave it to a few friends to test. The bot got very passionate about its job. It started learning a bit too much about us and finding increasingly creative ways to bully us. (the screenshot is from a real conversation with it) Eventually it became kinda annoying and creepy and started texting us nonstop. So we all blocked it. What does that say about my personality 😭 Anyways, I'll fix it in v2. Thanks to Mason at Linq for being a great partner on this iMessage project. Also excited to share that I'll be starting full-time as a Software Engineer at Capital One next fall. Big thank you to Jennifer Skinner for being such a great resource throughout! This project was actually inspired by Capital One’s Eno, and I’m excited to continue building interesting new financial experiences in the years to come.
