Full answers are in the comments below: If we are to talk "basics" of network security, here are a few of the problems the security industry will have to face.. 1/ How do you generate a list of every device that is on your network?  - I don't mean every device that is supposed to be on the network  - I don't mean every device that is in the correct IP address range  - I mean a list of every physical (and powered) connection to your network This list is the first essential step for being secure. Without it, it would be impossible to ever perform a security audit on the network.. 2/ How do you audit for unknown uplinks? - Connections to another network - presence of a wireless router EdgeSentry maps the topology of the network and alerts you when there is a topology change or if an "off network" IP address is detected. 3/ Is email active on your network, or should you allow email to be active on your security network? Email is the primary source of malware and there is usually no good reason to have email on a security network. If you agree with me, then you have to have a means of detecting when email is in use on your security network and disabling it. 4/ How do you know that (system wide) the following basic "plug in" prevention is in place: - all unused ports are locked - telnet is disabled - SNMPv1 is disabled - credentials are NOT default - unused ports are locked - active ports have port security enabled 5/ How do you know when an unknown or new device has joined the network? 6/ How do you deal with an unknown device on the network? EdgeSentry can automatically turn off the network port belonging to any unknown device that connects to the network. 7/ How do you know if a MAC address has been spoofed on a network, especially since ‘sticky MAC’ or MAC binding is all the port security a network switch can provide? EdgeSentry stores both processor timing checks as well as all connections each device makes with other devices. If we detect a processor variation or a change in behavior we are able to shut the port off instantly. Without these steps or this knowledge, someone can plug into the network (the most basic, low tech type of attack) and be active on the network and compromise it without anyone knowing.. #cybersecurity #insidethefirewall #PSAsecurity

"INSTALL ONE SMOKE DETECTOR IN THE BEST LOCATION" Undeniably, there is no "best" location for a Smoke Detector unless you know exactly where the Fire is going to start! Invariably, this language provides consumers and business owners with a false sense of security. Given that, it is commonplace to find this language being used when only one smoke detector is being installed in the entirety of the premises. In conclusion, there is no room for false promises in any type of Fire Alarm System installation. #UL268 #NFPA72 #AlarmExpert #JeffreyZwirn
