The IT professional posted this is open for work, and I know why... This metaphor doesn't work for RAID. One may argue, "but Anthony, it's just funny, cut the guy some slack." Although I may cut him slack as a human, I don't cut him slack is an IT professional. Jokes are most funny when they are based on reality, and take a different, unexpected perspective. Another common form of joke is exaggerating reality or making fun of ones own lack of knowledge. We could go on listing different patterns for crafting an effective joke, and all of them would start with a relatable reality. A capable technology professional looks at this post the same way an adult looks at a 2-year-old who is spouting off random potty words and giggling. The difference is, we don't expect the 2-year-old to understand what they're talking about and that's why they think it's funny. We don't expect an IT professional to not know what they're talking about, and that makes it not funny If you want to understand why this metaphor fails to launch, read on. RAID 1: write to both always, read from either RAID 0: write to both always, read from both always But, what you write and read in 0 vs 1 is different. In your metaphor it's all water, so you can't differentiate. Also, the RAID 0 picture doesn't make sense for any level because you never use one drive then the other. That might be JBOD, but definitely not RAID. In all RAID levels you are constantly using all disks. For RAID 5 you can only lose one disk and still use the device. In your picture you could lose two and still get water. Finally, the 0+1 picture doesn't make sense for the same reasons the 0 and 1 pictures didn't make sense. The better the engineering mind, the harder time they have relating to other people. They think different. It's a sacrifice their brain has made to understand things the average person can't. If you think the post in the screenshot is funny, you're probably not the best engineer. Sorry, not sorry. #technology #humor #competence

When I am talking to a person...and evaluating the kind of access that I want to afford them into my life - these are some things that I value. Look at their eyes. Are they at peace...or do you perceive chaos and confusion...fear...? When talking about their life, do they talk about growth and things they are doing to improve...or are they constantly in the center of drama and chaos and want you to validate or join them. Are they kind? Are their words measured and meaningful...do they convey truth without leaning to offense? Do they consider others in guiding their actions. Are they compassionate in how they view people and circumstances? Do they demonstrate emotional maturity in their decisions or are they rash and unpredictable? Every year, I evaluate the folks that have a free pass. And it changes. Some people are with me for a season. Some people are stuck with me... Well. Well. Job growth numbers had been overstated for the last year. Shocking. I wonder what else has been totally manufactured. The biggest downward revision came in professional and business services, where job growth was 358,000 less. Other areas revised lower included leisure and hospitality (-150,000), manufacturing (-115,000), and trade, transportation and utilities (-104,000).

So, I've seen organizations trying to prevent outgoing mail for certain mailboxes. Unfortunately, I'm not aware of a mailbox setting that does just that. Something like a switch/tick box on Distribution groups that prevents external mail to be sent to members (Allow people outside of my org to send email to this group). In most cases a #Mail #Rule is created and that does indeed do the trick, but I always try to find other options. Not that I don't like Mail Rules, but the collection of rules can become quite complex and there is often no real governance. They tend to get messy. However, in #Microsoft #Exchange Online you can have #Accepted #Domains and untick the option "Allow mail to be sent from this domain". Preferably add a domain that you have actually registered, a subdomain is also a possibility: https://lnkd.in/dK94kWQV for instance. Working with #PowerShell use the Set- or New-AcceptedDomain cmdlet and the -SendingFromDomainDisabled boolean. Note the placeholder for the description 🥸 Set the primary mail address using this domain on the mailbox. Internal users can still mail that object, external user depending on your configuration (MX record etc..). The mailbox can still mail internal users. Do be aware that if you have enabled #SentFromAliasEnabled in your org and you add an alias with a domain that is not limited, the mailbox is able to sent to external addresses. This might be a more manageable solutions to prevent mailboxes sending mail to the outside world. Do you agree? Or do you have another option that you consider even better? I have to correct myself a little. I was under the impression that this #Exchange Online setting prevented sending mail outside the organization. However, this setting prevents *all mail* from being sent, including to internal recipients. 🤦‍♂️ Lesson learned: It never said anything about external/outside organization only. And my tests were probably incorrectly setup, my guess is that I used SendAs and dit not change the From: value within Outlook. Or perhaps some settings where not processed. However, you can achieve my initial goal my creating a Mail Rule in the line of: Apply this rule if Is sent to 'Outside the organization' and sender's address domain portion belongs to any of these domains: 'https://lnkd.in/ey4Ghb3A' Do the following reject the message and include the explanation 'Outgoing mail for this account has been blocked due to company policy.' with the status code: '5.7.1' and Stop processing more rules You do have to add an domain with #Microsoft365, which will show up as an Accepted Domain in Exchange Online. If you use a subdomain, you do not have to prove ownership and therefor you do not need to create the domain on your (external) DNS. If you do, you might want to consider records to protect this subdomain against spoofing etc.. And if you want to accept external mail on this domain, create an MX record and check your #SMTP filtering settings! #WeekITtip #SimplifyNow

Why do we find so many articles about dead-end jobs and toxic culture if our executives are such highly educated people? We idolize the ruthless and promote those who lack passion and personality. If someone is passionate and has some personality, they are quickly labeled a flake or unworthy. We should only promote or hire those who actually love the vertical and what they would be doing in that position.

You just need to know how to get to the solution. It can be finding a person or following a process. Tolerance of the Unknowledgeable Phillip C. Stevens A common threat to IT culture is the intolerance of those without knowledge of our field. Yes, I mean threat, but I will come back to that later. What does that intolerance look like? Active intolerance can manifest as mockery and insulting behavior, either to the user or to our coworkers. Passive effects of intolerance are a bit more insidious as they lead us to believe that our users are inferior, bad at their jobs, or lack general intelligence. Passive learned attitudes of intolerance can be the direct result of being in a toxic environment of IT people who denigrate our users. Why is this a threat? Both active behavior and the resulting passive attitudes developed further perpetuate the age old and tired stereotypes about people who are in IT being socially inept. But, it also creates an IT nightmare of our own making: breaking down of communication channels between IT and other parts of our organization. Negative perceptions of IT staff, especially when reinforced by IT staff behavior: -Reduces the likelihood of users wanting to talk to IT. -Amplifies shadow IT by working with a friendlier coworker who may know more IT. -Reduces reporting of issues to IT. What can we do? The hardest part is of course recognizing the behavior is occurring. To me, the most important things to remember and inform how we treat people are: 1. We in IT are subject matter experts who are hired because we know IT. If everyone was skilled at all aspects of IT, there would be no reason for helpdesks, etc. 2. IT knowledge is in fact learned knowledge. No one is born with knowledge of IT systems. 3. Knowledge of one system, or lack thereof, does not reflect the intelligence of an individual. The biggest thing we can DO is work on empathy and respect. Actively recognize that the culture of mocking our users, even behind closed doors, is still inherently toxic behavior. Recognizing at its core, users asking for help are acknowledging that they lack knowledge and recognize that we in IT are the people who can help them. Asking for help is a confession of our need to rely on others and a lack of knowledge, so why should we punish this?

"The more change we bring to our current posture often requires more posture be brought to that change" Meaningful change in any organization - rather it is to process, culture or go to market strategy requires a tremendous amount of organizational buy in from your internal teams. Decisions made in silo often result in nightmarish results. It is incredibly important to the process of changing the process that we take time to deliver the - who, what, where, when and why to our internal team members and that everyone understand the impact and the rational for the need for change. The level of energy we bring to the conversation, and the care in which we deliver that message will be felt in the adoption. When it comes time to change your posture...spend a lot of time posturing that change! #thoughtleadership #mentoring #growthmindset
