2025 will be the year when federal #cybersecurity takes the leap into #AI as these technologies become commonplace across the federal government. Things will accelerate rapidly with the changes underway and I always bet on technology. As AI evolves, global leaders will also move towards clearer regulations for how to develop – and safeguard – AI innovation while people will push the barriers. Proud to share my latest piece in FedScoop. The rules that protect federal networks are still stuck in 2021. OMB’s M-21-31 was a big step forward for cybersecurity logging, but in today’s world of AI-driven attacks and hybrid systems, it’s not enough. Agencies need continuous logging and open standards so defenders can actually see what’s happening across their environments in real time. ICYMI: New York Gov. Kathy Hochul signed legislation Friday that requires local governments in the state to begin reporting cyberattacks on their networks. The new law orders municipalities and public authorities to notify the state’s Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Services within 72 hours of a hack. It also compels these organizations to report any ransom payments made to hackers within 24 hours, and mandates security awareness training for government employees in New York. The rules align with previous cybersecurity regulations issued by the state’s Department of Financial Services, and with pending federal requirements that the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency is hammering out. “We’re really trying to unify and harmonize these across different state agencies, and with the federal government,” Colin A., New York’s chief cyber officer, tells me.
