What a fun and informative morning at Social Media Breakfast Madison! Fantastic presentation by Gray Miller, Denise Jess, and Bob Jacobson. The did a wonderful job sharing their insights and best practices on accessible social media design. Here are a few takeaways that expanded or reinforced my knowledge: Platform Accessibility: Understanding how different platforms improve or hinder accessibility. For instance, Instagram poses challenges due to complex accessible features, whereas YouTube offers better time management opportunities along with in-depth content exploration. Grayscale Perspective: Viewing websites or images in grayscale can increase user focus—a perspective I had never considered before! CTAs and Anxiety: Avoiding call-to-actions with arbitrary time limits to prevent creating user anxiety. SEO and Accessibility: Best practices in accessible design often align with best SEO practices. Camel Case Hashtags: Using camel case in hashtags (e.g., #SocialMediaBreakfast) allows screen readers to interpret them accurately and effectively. So what am I thinking about for the rest of the day (and onward)? Universal Design breaks down barriers and promotes social inclusion, whether it's visual, neurodivergent (ADHD, Autism, Dyspraxia, and Dyslexia all fall within the spectrum of “Neurodiversity” and are all neurodiverse conditions), auditory inclusion, etc. As a marketing professional and graphic designer, it's my job and responsibility to share information in the most accessible way possible. While the limitations of our tools, apps, and bandwidth can be challenging, it's an excellent opportunity to stretch our design skills, be more mindful in our communication, and make the world a bit more inclusive. Hey LinkedIn! Long-time scroller, first-time personal plea poster. First the great news: After six life-changing years in New York City, my family and I are starting a new adventure this summer. We’re moving to Louisville, KY! We still love so much about NYC, but we’re ready for bigger, more affordable housing with less traffic, horn blaring, and sidewalk dog poop. With my sister and her crew living down the street, we’re looking forward to family time, clean air, and of course all the bourbon. Now the not-so-great news: Unfortunately, I’ve been informed I can’t keep my NYC metro-based job. While watching the VMAs, I saw a new favorite ad. To me, Kraft Heinz's Mac and Cheese "Bear Hug" spot is perfection. The ad starts with a shot of someone wearing socks on lush green grass. This opening scene sparks curiosity about what product/brand it is about. It makes people wonder why the person is wearing socks when feeling the grass, since this is usually shown when someone is barefoot. Then it takes a surprising direction, the feet lift up, revealing the actor smiling and embracing something furry. The shot of the feet from behind the furry creature and the close-up of the hug set the scene and introduce the bear, furthering the storyline. Then we get a close-up of our bear, fully taking in that hug, and then a wide shot to show the magical forest with the bear and actor doing a heartfelt embrace with a slight sway. Enter the spoonful of mac and cheese ✨. The actor then returns back down to earth, leaving the dreamlike scene, to be at a kitchen table. While still sporting a face of pure bliss, the actor relishes that first bite feeling. Great things about this ad: • Bears are universally loved—by people of all ages—and, similar to Kraft Mac and Cheese, they evoke feelings of warmth and comfort. • The bear perfectly balances being adorable and lifelike with its expressions and sounds. AI/CGI animals are tricky to get right since people put a lot of pressure on the outcome. My mind immediately goes to The Call of the Wild, 2020 (which appears as a result when you search for "cgi dog movie.") • Using the rich green scene having the actor floats from reality to symbolize how Mac and cheese transports you and feels like a bear hug was brilliant. Overall, it's clever, heartwarming, and relatable. A series of vignettes that hew to basic good TV and advertising principles (rare for B2B): - Make the product the hero of the story - Know what the story is: the hero/product is saving whom/ICP from what/the problem you solve. - Humor - Economy of words - Enter in the middle of the scene The secret sauce is that you want the advertising to make the audience FEEL something at the end. Fascinating article about using a product mindset to build culture. It's always been intriguing when I take a moment to realize how much I utilize UX processes, techniques, and thinking in the areas outside of direct UX practice - in both business and life. For example, user-centered design is integral to the Netherlands extensive, successful, and efficient cycling and public transit infrastructure. It reminds us that when we take a transparent (honest, humble) human/user-centered approach to building things or solving problems - the quality of success can be so much more than the alternative (siloed thinking, half-hearted collaboration or no collaboration, gatekeeping, lacking curiosity, lacking data).

I don't believe there should be a hard and fast "yes" or "no" when restaurants are considering working with influencers. 1. Do you have the budget? 2. Do you have the appropriate staffing to work with these influencers? 3. Do you have the knowledge needed to measure success? Ask yourself a few of these questions before deciding if incorporating influencers into your broader marketing strategy makes sense for you.
