Activities and Societies: 2015 Bumblebees Cohort

Graduated from Dev BootCamp, an intensive 18-week "bootcamp" that teaches people how to become junior web developers. The program is 9-weeks remote, and 9-weeks on campus. For our final project, I worked on a team to produce a website ("Hashography") that enables people to visualize tweets in real-time based on a keyword search. After graduation, I attended an optional "Career Week" to help prepare me for employment opportunities.

  • "Aspects of Informal Economy as the Neglected Ingredients of Opium Production in Afghanistan"

    Michigan Journal of Asian Studies

An article that explains why opium production is prevalent in Afghanistan, by reviewing reports from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, previous literature on the informal economy (e.g., black markets), and the history of Afghanistan. The article concludes that three main factors (debt, irrigation, and insecurity) were responsible for the high opium production in the country.

  • ZombieWriter

    - Present

ZombieWriter is an open-source Ruby gem that generates short news articles based on rearranging the order of user-provided paragraphs. Provides proper citation (in the form of a hyperlink) to the original sources of these paragraphs. Users can specify whether they want to use "machine learning" (Latent Semantic Analysis and K-Means Clustering) or "randomization" when generating news articles.

  • Hashography

Hashography visualizes how users are tweeting about certain words in real time, around the world. Written entirely in Javascript, it utilizes the Twitter and Google Maps API, Node.js, and Socket.io.
