During their research of alternatives to the current state-of-the-art optical atomic clocks operating at several hundreds of terahertz, IMRA researchers encountered the common issue of standing waves, also referred to as signal reflections or mismatches. These undesirable waves, or ripples, can attenuate power output, distort the information on the carrier and, in extreme cases, damage internal components. To alleviate the problem of standing waves at lower microwave frequencies, engineers rely on Faraday rotation isolators – more commonly referred to simply as isolators. The problem is that traditional isolators have very high insertion loss at higher frequencies within the THz regime, making them unsuitable for most systems. ENSCO Staff Scientist Jason Byrd is contributing to breakthroughs in parallel programming with his new paper "Massively Parallel Computational Chemistry with the Super Instruction Architecture and ACES4" in the Journal of Physical Chemistry! To fully harness modern large-scale computing systems, we need faster, more efficient ways to develop high-performance software. The Super Instruction Architecture (SIA) was designed to handle complex, data-intensive tasks—originally for quantum chemistry—and has now been upgraded in the new ACES4 platform. This paper explores how SIA helps manage massive datasets and showcases its capabilities through advanced chemistry calculations. For senior Olivia Rosenstein, her cross-country participation provides momentum to her studies as an experimental physicist working with 2D materials, optics, and computational cosmology. Olivia Rosenstein, an undergraduate researcher with MIT CQE member, Professor Richard Fletcher in his Emergent Quantum Matter Group, is helping to build an erbium-lithium trap for studies of many-body physics and quantum simulation. The group’s focus during this past fall was increasing the trap’s number of erbium atoms and decreasing the atoms’ temperature while preparing the experiment’s next steps. To this end, Rosenstein helped analyze the behavior of the apparatus’s magnetic fields, perform imaging of the atoms, and develop infrared (IR) optics for future stages of laser cooling, which the group is working on now. I'm so so thrilled to see our first GothamQ paper formally published in my most favorite journal, PRX Quantum 🎉 (link at the end) I've published many papers as a grad student, postdoc, and now a group lead but this work is so unique to me. To be fully honest, for the first time I feel like we have done something really impactful! On the surface, this is a very simple work! We distributed entanglement in NYC. But in reality this paper is the result of 4 years of nonstop hard work of our physicists, engineers, and software developers. We had to invent and manufacture a new entanglement source that works at room temperature (hence actually useful for qu. networking) but has lots of advantages over all the other alternative options. We had to invent and manufacture the devices that very rapidly and with very low loss monitor the infrastructure for any imperfections. We had to write thousands of lines of codes so both devices work together automatically and without any need for manual optimization. And on top of all that we had to negotiate and build a quantum testbed in one of the world's most busy and chaotic cities. We did all that to prove one thing: Entanglement distribution is ready for prime time, beyond academic and research testbeds. The technology has reached a pivotal point where everything is robust and high quality for practical use cases by a much wider community than just quantum physicists. This shift is not only essential for us to be able to use entanglement for applications we already know of, but also to make it widely available for much more creative people than us to constantly think of use cases for quantum networks and entanglement links. Read the new paper by Josias Langbehn, Kyrylo Snizhko, Igor Gornyi, Giovanna Morigi, Yuval Gefen, and Christiane Koch studying dilute measurement-induced cooling of quantum systems to many-body ground states 👉 https://lnkd.in/euRkSkMb Cooling a quantum system to its ground state is important for the characterization of nontrivial interacting systems and in the context of a variety of quantum information platforms. In this paper, we identify conditions under which measurement-based cooling protocols can be taken to the ultimate dilute limit where the number of detectors is independent of system size. For two examples of frustration-free one-dimensional spin chains, we show that steering on a single link is sufficient to cool these systems into their unique ground states. We corroborate our analytical arguments with finite-size numerical simulations and discuss further applications of dilute cooling. Researchers from NVIDIA, Stony Brook University, and Brookhaven National Laboratory have developed a charge-preserving quantum algorithm (CPVQD) to improve quantum simulations of excited states. By using symmetry and conserved charges, CPVQD reduces system complexity, enabling faster and more efficient simulations, particularly in quantum chemistry and nuclear physics. Tested on systems with up to 24 qubits, this algorithm achieved enhanced computational performance through NVIDIA’s CUDA-Q platform and NERSC’s Perlmutter system. Despite its efficiency, challenges like noise and scalability on current quantum hardware remain.
