PTAG Trucking News : Beginning this Sunday, a weeklong initiative will kick off focusing on inspecting commercial vehicle brakes. Get ready for Brake Safety Week, a crucial event for commercial vehicle operators that starts this Sunday. Running from August 25 to 31, 2024, the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) will lead the charge in inspecting commercial motor vehicles, honing in on brake systems and components. The primary objective is to prevent accidents caused by brake malfunctions, with any trucks found to have brake-related violations being sidelined until the necessary repairs are made. In this year's Brake Safety Week, inspectors will focus on brake linings and pads. To help truckers get prepared, the PTAG is sharing ten essential tips to ensure your brake linings and pads are up to standard: 1. Regularly inspect visible brake linings and pads during pre- and post-trip checks. 2. Look out for signs of missing lining, like grooves in the drum from rivet contact. 3. Check the shoe-to-drum clearance and ensure adequate lining on the shoe. 4. Watch for leaks from the hub or other parts that could contaminate the lining/pad surface. 5. Confirm no lining blocks or pads are missing. 6. Inspect for visible cracks or voids in the lining block. 7. Check for exposed rivets or loose lining blocks on the shoe. 8. For disc brakes, pay special attention to rotor condition, looking for heavy rust or metal-to-metal contact. 9. Ensure all repairs meet the brake manufacturer's specifications. 10. Report any issues in your driver vehicle inspection reports and have defective linings/pads fixed by the motor carrier. Say it with me: incentives drive behavior. Biggest concern I hear from Stellantis dealers (Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram, etc): Incentives are out of whack -- in a big way. The automaker has abruptly stopped paying some of its dealers for positive customer surveys and is instead paying them on the "number of cars ordered." (???) It's unclear to me at the moment how far and wide this has spread (nationally vs. regionally) and how many dealers have been impacted... But either way, feels like an uncalculated, short-term move by a brand struggling to hit sales targets. Weird move.

(How dare they sell Scout Motors!) 👀 The NADA and state dealer associations across the country plan to leave no stone unturned as they push back against Scout Motors' nasty decision to bypass Volkswagen stores. (In the vast majority of states, the OEMs are not permitted to sell direct or compete with their dealers with products aimed specifically at U.S. consumers.) 🚗 Its corporate structure and formal attachment to VW Group could be a challenge in its quest to sell direct to a consumer.
