𝐃𝐚𝐲 9/100: 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐚𝐬𝐞 𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐧𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐦𝐚𝐤𝐞. ⚡ Welcome to Day 9. Today, we talk about 𝐒𝐩𝐞𝐞𝐝. In System Design, there is a harsh reality: 𝐇𝐚𝐫𝐝 𝐃𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐬 (𝐃𝐚𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐬) 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐬𝐥𝐨𝐰. 𝐑𝐀𝐌 (𝐂𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐞) 𝐢𝐬 𝐟𝐚𝐬𝐭. 1.Reading from a Database is like walking to the Library to find a fact. (Takes time). 2.Reading from a Cache is like looking at a Sticky Note on your monitor. (Instant). To make apps like Instagram or Twitter feel instant, we put a 𝐂𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐞 (like Redis or Memcached) in front of the database. But here is the tricky part: 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐬 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐬𝐚𝐯𝐞 (𝐰𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐞) 𝐧𝐞𝐰 𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐚? You have two main strategies. Let's explain them using a 𝐂𝐨𝐫𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐒𝐞𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲. 📝 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐲 1: 𝐖𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐞-𝐓𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 (𝐓𝐡𝐞 "𝐒𝐚𝐟𝐞" 𝐀𝐩𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐚𝐜𝐡) 🛡️ Imagine you are a CEO. You dictate a new memo to your Secretary (The Cache). 1.𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐑𝐮𝐥𝐞: The Secretary writes it down in her notebook AND immediately walks to the basement to file it in the official Archive (The Database). 2𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐮𝐥𝐭: She only confirms "Done" once the paper is safe in the basement. 3.𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐬: 100% Safety. Even if the office burns down (Cache crashes), the file is in the basement. 4.𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐬: Slow. You have to wait for her to walk to the basement every single time. 5.𝐔𝐬𝐞 𝐂𝐚𝐬𝐞:Banking transactions. You cannot lose money. 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐲 2: 𝐖𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐞-𝐁𝐚𝐜𝐤 (𝐓𝐡𝐞 "𝐅𝐚𝐬𝐭" 𝐀𝐩𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐚𝐜𝐡) 🚀 Same scenario. You dictate a memo. 1.𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐑𝐮𝐥𝐞: The Secretary scribbles it on a sticky note and immediately says "Done!" to you. She promises to walk to the basement and file it "later" when she has free time. 2.𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐬: Blazing Fast. You don't wait for the basement trip. 3.𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐬 : Risky. If the fire alarm rings (Server Crash) before she goes to the basement, that sticky note is lost forever. 4.𝐔𝐬𝐞 𝐂𝐚𝐬𝐞 : Youtube View Counts. If a video has 1,000,005 views and we lose 5 views during a crash, nobody cares. Speed is more important than perfect accuracy. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐄𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐓𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐲 🧠 Caching isn't just about "making things fast." It's about choosing your risk level. 1.Need consistency? 𝐖𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐞-𝐓𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡. 2.Need raw performance? 𝐖𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐞-𝐁𝐚𝐜𝐤. If you are building a system, ask yourself: "If the power goes out right now, is it okay to lose the last 5 seconds of data?"
