Funding for the volunteer fire service has become a much greater challenge than it used to be, even just 10 years ago! Everybody is surely feeling the pressure of inflation, but now is when funding is needed the most. Not just from a few people, but every member of the community. If every person in our first due service area gave at least $10/month, our entire budget would be covered. We are not talking about a small budget. We are talking about a $1.09 million budget. These vital funds give our firefighters the tools, training, and equipment to fight the changing fires. With increased governmental regulations and more aggressive fires, our firefighters are faced with extremely difficult and taxing requirements - 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. As a department, Garden Spot Fire Rescue is getting creative in what we do, how we respond, and how we remain fiscally responsible; however, we need every ounce of the community's support to do this. It's not our department, it's the community's department. Our team just does their best to serve them and meet their expectations as a strong, community-focused volunteer fire company. I'm proud to work for such a community-minded fire company! What we have today may soon be a fleeting thought of yesterday. We must not become complacent in what we have and take for granted the power and importance of the volunteer fire service.

This National Road Safety Week 2024, Acusensus is highlighting the positive contributions made by others in road safety. Today’s National Road Safety Week theme is ‘Road Safety for the Next Generation.’ Amber Community is a not-for-profit organisation that is dedicated to enhancing road incident support and education for the safety and wellbeing of road users – they provide free counselling and support to people impacted by road trauma and education programs to raise awareness about road trauma’s effects on people’s lives. Acusensus believes it is significant to provide support to those who have been impacted by road incidents and also bring awareness to the public to ensure fatalities are minimised. It is important to educate people on the various behavioural changes we can make to ensure we drive safely and create better habits on our roads, creating a safer road network for the next generation. The death or serious injury of a loved one has wide and ongoing detrimental effects on friends, family and children, and generates a deep wound that in most cases will never heal. For this reason, organisations and communities such as Amber Community are very important to ensure people are able to return to their lives after road trauma and to ensure such tragedies can be minimised as much as possible. 𝗪𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝘀𝗮𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗯𝘆 𝗱𝗮𝘆, 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗳𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗯𝘆 𝗻𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁! 🚒🔥 We’re proud to highlight a special group within our team who give back in a meaningful way. No fewer than 3 of our employees have chosen to volunteer at the fire department in their neighbourhood, each having their own unique reasons for making and maintaining this commitment. Adriaan Otte, our Lead Engineer, feels that it is important to contribute to the community and this is his way of doing that. However, next to that, there are a number of reasons he likes being part of the voluntary fire department: “The team dynamics is something else! It’s very cool to walk into situations others walk away from and to do this with a team of like-minded people is great. Also, the fire department has helped me to get to know more people when I recently moved to a new town and to communicate short and concise. Occasionally I can be a bit lengthy in my explanations and you’ll learn to overcome that quickly when in an urgent situation”. Tim Visser, our Head of Operations, loves the challenge, suspense and action that comes with the job as a fire fighter. He is also a fan of the group dynamic and wants to make a difference in his community. “I believe everyone should be involved in some form of volunteer work. For me, being a firefighter is the perfect fit because I strongly identify with the core values essential to being an emergency responder”, says Tim. Rudy Dijkstra, one of our Non-Executive Directors, loves the local impact he can make and that he can contribute to a liveable and safe environment. “I love the technical challenge; being a firefighter requires toggling between planning and acting. As an entrepreneur I often tackle challenges that others might shy away from and this is a trait that fits well in this line of work. An added benefit is getting to do this with a great group of people. Next to that, I feel it is important to do a type of charitable work and with aforementioned points, this job suits me best”, thus Rudy. The recent sinking of the tug boat with two crew members at the eastern anchorage on 4-9-24 is under investigation. One of the crew members rescued, died in hospital while the second crew is still missing. The dead crew is the 13th fatality this year and within 7 days since the last one on 28-8-24. QUESTION: Did both crew members don life jacket? If so, the rescued crew may not have died and the other may have been rescued by press time. Why was donning life jacket NOT mandated under WSH Act and enforced by the port authority? This latest incident is a stark reminder for all stakeholders in all industries to put safety of their employees a top priority. All parties concerned must stop the unnecessary loss of lives in workplaces. One precious life loss is just one too many. Safety at workplaces must be the main focus and always be. SAFETY FIRST is not a slogan but must be our culture at all times.

During my volunteering stint at the Red Cross, we were trained in first aid and the basics of triage in emergency situations: * First, ensure the person is breathing. * Then, check for any bleeding. * Finally, address any broken bones. This approach has profoundly influenced how I tackle and solve problems, instilling in me the essence of first-principles thinking: identifying what keeps us "breathing" and our "hearts pumping." In the business world, "breathing," "bleeding," and "broken bones" can be likened to metrics, which vary across industries. Defining and monitoring these operational basics should be a core task for anyone in operations. Each individual, at their own level, should be adept at identifying when any of these metrics deviate from the norm.
