It has been very clear to everyone that the first phase of AI related spend will come via the stuff that goes into your datacentre; I’m not talking NVIDIA H100s, I’m talking the data stack, security stack, comms stack related hardware and the DC structures them selves (see https://lnkd.in/ewMYnbH3). That is the back-end. What about the front-end? While all PC/Notebook OEMs had been talking about it for a while (which we comment on as part of our Softcat plc commentary), the below announcement is one of the clearest indications that Microsoft is very keen on driving another workspace hardware upgrade cycle… last seen in the midst of COVID. I am probably not going to run-out and upgrade my laptop… still

Windows Studio Effects utilizes AI on select Windows devices with compatible Neural Processing Units (NPUs) to apply special effects to the device camera (currently supports front-facing camera) or built-in microphone. Windows Studio Effects work with your device hardware 📷 To ensure that Windows Studio Effects is trustworthy, secure, and built responsibly, it uses models that were extensively evaluated, guided and trained by fairness testing throughout development. Additionally, the data set used by Creative filters include 3,000 hand-drawn portraits of users of various ages, genders, and races, each drawn to adhere to a style guide that was created based on a study of user preferences. For Teleprompter and Creative filters, great consideration was put into the product functionality for people with unique eye characteristics.
